The Ohio University School of Film is dedicated to providing an educational environment of creativity, diversity and excellence in which talented, motivated and disciplined students can examine and develop the art and craft of the motion picture as an art form, educational tool and a dynamic cultural force in the 21st Century.

The School of Film offers two graduate degree programs and two undergraduate degree programs. See: Underground Ohio University Film

The MFA in Film program is a professional three-year program of study for talented individuals seeking advanced training in directing, screenwriting, producing, cinematography, editing and motion picture sound with a solid background in film history, theory, and criticism. The MFA is a terminal degree and is designed for students who wish to work as independent film artists, enter the film industry, or teach at the college or university level.

The MA in Film Studies is a two-year program in film history, analysis, and theory designed to prepare students for further study at the doctoral level or for careers in which a film studies background may be relevant, including film criticism; arts-related writing fields; administration of arts, museum, or academic programs; administrative positions in film or media production; and library, archive, or film preservation work. Coursework includes a two-semester sequence in film history and a range of electives on film theory and criticism, film genres, and, in particular, international cinemas.

The BFA in Film is a unique curriculum providing professional training in all major aspects of filmmaking alongside a solid foundation in film studies. The program prepares students to succeed in careers in the film and television industry, in professional areas utilizing time-based media (i.e., the web, advertising), and/or as independent artists. The focus of the program is to develop each student’s individual strengths as visual storytellers, creative voices, and critical media practitioners within the context of a rigorous liberal arts education. By encouraging students to master a wide range of tools as well as specific areas of knowledge and experience, the program aims to nurture filmmakers that will be ready, upon graduation, to work in a multifaceted and rapidly changing media world, while discovering and expressing their unique creative vision.

The School of Film also offers a BFA in Film through the Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College (HTC) program. This degree combines a broad background in the liberal arts with professional study in film. This is a four-year program of study for exceptional students, culminating in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Students typically pursue higher degrees in film-related areas or enter a rich variety of careers in the film industry. Students accepted into this degree program receive extremely generous scholarship packages. See: Film

These degree programs are augmented by generous funding packages for both undergraduate and graduate students, an award-winning faculty, the annual Athens International Film and Video Festival, a broad range of visiting artists and scholars, and the rich cultural and intellectual life of Ohio University.

  • Sometimes Southeast Ohio feels disconnected from the big industry towns
Ohio University has long been one of the best kept secrets in MFA film programs. Located in the foothills of Appalachia, in the small college town of Athens, there are beautiful natural exteriors. The theater program is top notch, producing talented designers, writers and actors who regularly work with the filmmakers to make films that do well on the festival circuit. The program is small and intimate with caring faculty who continue to produce their own diverse body of work. The 40 year old IMBD and Oscar qualifying Athens International Film and Video Festival brings amazing international, independent, experimental, narrative, and documentary film and filmmakers to Athens every year. Students have opportunities to see a range of new work and meet the filmmakers. The first year "Bootcamp" gives students a foundation in screenwriting, camera, production, acting, directing, sound and editing as they make two black and white films, and one HD documentary. The next two years allow more specialization and individualization as students hone in on their career tracks.

Most students receive some funding packages that include some combination of tuition waivers and stipends for Graduate Assistantships. The funding combined with the affordability of living in Athens, the 24 hour access to an Avid editing lab, the access to lighting and camera equipment, and the affordability of shooting films in Athens makes this an affordable place to study and make quality films that will jump start your filmmaking career.

Ohio University has produced many successful independent filmmakers, film professors, experimental filmmakers, documentary filmmakers, and professionals working in editing, producing, screenwriting, casting, and all areas of film and media.
