I know it says sound design but I didn’t mean for it to—I was admitted to film production. They don’t require a stated emphasis, if I had to pick now it would either be directing or production design.

This is for Undergraduate? I'll need to make an undergraduate section to move it to.

Congrats!

Added it to the new Undergraduate Application category! Be sure to get your friends and peers to add their undergraduate applications too. I'd love to have more undergraduate applicants on the site.

congratulations!! what was your GPA and SAT? Thanks!

Thanks! It wasn’t my SAT that got me in, lol, that was very average—1170. Uw GPA was around 3.8 weighted with dual enrollment college courses (no AP or honors available at my Hs) was around 4.3. I firmly believe it was about my creative supplements—writing, creative resume and film.

Thanks for the quick reply. That's awesome!!! My GPA is really low but have good SAT and portfolio. Not sure if I should apply to Chapman with a low GPA?

Couple things...first Chapman undergrad doesn't ask for a portfolio. If you are applying film production you have to create a 2 minute film based on their prompt and that is the only sample you can send. Then they have some specific writing supplement prompts and you submit a creative resume that is limited to five items. They are REALLY specific.

Second, the way it was explained to me that it works is this....you submit the common app to Chapman and the Chapman admissions office checks to make sure you meet the campus minimum GPA and SAT/ACT scores. Then if you do, they forward the creative supplement to Dodge Film and Media Arts. They review that and base their admissions on that mainly. They have the rest available to them if they seek it out, but its not part of the package they review generally, only the creative supplement is,

SOOOOOOOO, I don't know what "really low" is for GPA, but if you meet the campus minimum for sure apply!

That's a great insight! Thanks! I never cared enough to focus on my grades, wish I had.. Rest is good in my app I think..

Congrats! Did you apply early action and any tips and advice?

Yeah they require you to apply early action for film production. My biggest advise would be to tell your own story in the film you make to answer their prompt (basically two minute short with no dialogue about a character making an emotional decision) don’t try and figure out what they “want.” And focus on telling that story visually.

I did a science fiction, post apocalyptic film because that’s what I do.

Watch the application films on YouTube and Vimeo, but don’t try and “copy” the ones that were admitted. Don’t stress having the best equipment or footage focus on telling a story.

Is it for sure that you have to apple EA for Film Production? I don't remember seeing anything about that and, well, it's past the EA deadline

You don't have to apply EA, but the deadline for EA, ED, or RD is November 1st regardless.
