The American Film Institute Conservatory has been a leader in film education for more than half of a century. Thanks to its rigorous selection process, award-winning staff, and close proximity to the heart of the film industry, AFI is widely coveted by disciplined filmmakers who want to elevate their career. In 2022, FilmSchool.org named AFI Best West Coast Film School. And in 2025, The Hollywood Reporter ranked AFI no. 3 in its annual list of the best U.S. film schools.

Fellows specialize in one of six disciplines— Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design, and Screenwriting — in a highly collaborative environment. From Ari Aster (writer-director, "Hereditary," "Midsommar,") to Terrence Malik (writer-director, "Badlands," "Tree of Life"), alumni have become households names in the industry, earning four Academy Awards and 19 Emmy Awards in the past five years alone.

The AFI Conservatory online application opens on September 5 for all Fall 2026 applicants. Keep reading to discover how to apply, the unique requirements for each MFA discipline, and other important information.

How to Get Into AFI Conservatory: Exclusive Advice From the Admissions Office (Part 1)

Ask anyone about where to go to film school, and you’re bound to hear the American Film Institute Conservatory. First established in 1967, AFI is world renowned for producing pioneers and trailblazers in the film industry. In 2024, The Hollywood Reporter ranked AFI the no. 2 film program in the...

During their studies, Fellows form crews of six to create three cycle films in their first year and one in their second year, with each film requiring a new crew. To ensure all disciplines maximize their on-set and post-production experience, the AFI Conservatory rotates crew selection opportunities. For example, if Directing gets first choice for the first cycle film, a different discipline will receive first choice for the second cycle film.

Thesis films make up a significant portion of tuition (read “AFI Cost of Attendance and Financial Aid (2024)”). In their second year, Fellows must develop at least one thesis film by assembling their own crews. They must also create their final portfolio, such as a reel or a series of short films.

FilmSchool.org’s exclusive interview with the AFI Admissions Office offers a deeper look into how to apply and what to expect as a Fellow. Jill Murrin, Director of Admissions; Giovanni Maldonado Chinea, Admissions Coordinator; and Anna Proulx, former Director of Admissions offer insights into AFI's conservatory model, how AFI differs from other film schools, tips to develop a strong portfolio, pitfalls to avoid when applying, and more.

AFI DWW+ (originally known as the AFI Directing Workshop for Women) offers women directors a more affordable alternative to attending AFI as a traditional Fellow. The program has since grown into one of the nation’s most respected workshops for women in film and television, training more than 350 filmmakers including Lesli Linka Glatter (dir., "Mad Men") and Neema Barnette (dir., "Gilmore Girls," "Luke Cage"). Participants must commit to multiple workshops and raise up to $50,000 in support of their films.

Applications are open for the class of 2026-27 and will close on Wednesday, September 3 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Eight candidates will be selected. The program welcomes women filmmakers at least 21 years of age with five years’ professional experience in film, television, performing arts, and/or visual arts.
