These 4 Film School Summer Programs Are Still Taking Applications

New York Film Academy

New York Film Academy offers summer camps for teens interested in filmmaking, acting, photography, video game design, animation, and broadcast journalism. Its film summer camp programs are designed to help high school students ages 14-17 learn the ins and outs of the entertainment industry.

High school filmmakers hone their craft in film industry hubs New York City, Los Angeles, Florence (Italy), South Beach, and Gold Coast (Australia). Each program lasts between two days and twelve weekends with classes scheduled Monday-Friday. The final application and payment deadline for in-person students is at 4:00 p.m. (EST) the Wednesday before the program start date. For online students, the final application and payment deadline is at 4:00 p.m. (EST) the Thursday before the program start date. To apply, fill out the form on the New York Film Academy website with a non-refundable $25 deposit.

New York Film Academy summer camps range from $800 to $2000+ and require a non-refundable $500 deposit upon acceptance. Those who apply and/or pay the full tuition after the final deadline are admitted on a case-by-case basis.

1-Week Teen Filmmaking


The perfect pre-college film program or a creative summer adventure, this one-week filmmaking intensive mimics a real set. Campers use industry-grade equipment and rotate among crew positions to help each other develop one digital film.

3-Week Teen Online Screenwriting


Young screenwriters can boost their future careers in this online course. Campers learn to master the three-act structure and other forms of narrative storytelling. Virtual workshops mirror a real television writer’s room or a development meeting for a film.

(Note: New York Film Academy requires campers to use screenwriting software Final Draft or Celtx.)

1-Week and 3-Week Teen Online Filmmaking


New York Film Academy makes distance learning more immersive and hands-on by requiring campers to write, direct, shoot, and edit their own short projects. The 1-Week program allows campers to make a 5 to 7 shot video, while campers in the 3-Week program walk away with a 5 to 7 shot video and a POV video. Assignments and shoots must be completed on weekday evenings.

University of Texas Austin Moody College of Communication


UT Austin’s Department of Radio-Television-Film produces some of the best and brightest young filmmakers, including the Duplass Brothers (Jeff, Who Lives at Home) and Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums). FilmSchool.org ranked UT Austin the runner-up for Best Southern Film School in 2022.

In all of UT Austin’s pre-college film programs, campers work in groups of up to five students and receive a copy of the final film. Advanced Filmmaking (High School)


Over the course of two weeks, campers learn how to develop scripts, execute cutting edge filmmaking techniques, and master the art of collaboration. This pre-college film program is also open to recent high school graduates.

Camp Flix


For over a decade, Camp Flix has offered one of the top summer filmmaking camps in the Southeast. Located only 20 minutes outside of downtown Atlanta, this film school summer camp places young filmmakers in America’s new movie capital. Rising Atlanta film studios include Trilith (Spiderman: No Way Home, Ant Man) and Shadowbox (Godzilla: King of Monsters, Jungle Cruise).

Campers ages 11 to 17 collaborate to create high-quality digital shorts in a one-week day or overnight session. High school filmmakers can take advantage of working on nationally renowned college campuses in Atlanta to help narrow down what they need in a film school environment.

Session 3 — Emory University


Campers work together in small groups to learn about the entire film life cycle and acting at Emory University. Instruction offered by film industry professionals gives campers an authentic experience of collaborating with industry leaders. Each session is capped off with a Hollywood-style Friday night gala premiere. Returning campers can take advanced classes in Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Visual Effects, and more.

School of Creative and Performing Arts (SOCAPA)


Founded in 2001 by a collective of New York artists, the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SOCAPA) helps aspiring filmmakers ages 14 to 18 strengthen their filmmaking skills. Each program covers the basics of film and helps high school students walk away with 2+ polished projects for their film school applications. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible for college credit.

For a fully immersive preview of the film industry, campers study in Los Angeles and New York City. Campers also get the full film school experience by living and working in dorms at New York University, Pace University, and Occidental College.For an artistic expedition filled with prolific filming locations, study in Burlington, Vermont.

Campers spend two or three weeks honing their craft in Manhattan or Los Angeles. This filmmaking camp gives students a preview of screenwriting classes at the collegiate level. Campers create two shorter screenplays (4-8 pages each), one longer screenplay (10-12 pages), or the first act of a feature-length screenplay, in addition to one group film project.

2-Week and 3-Week Core Filmmaking


Future directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, and showrunners will benefit from SOCAPA’s teenage summer programs. The 3-Week program in Burlington welcomes campers ages 14 to 17, while the 2-Week program in Manhattan welcomes campers ages 14 to 18.

Instructors teach the Hollywood method of dual-system, sync-sound production to help students make three films based on the works of Pierre and August Lumière, Edwin Porter, and Stanley Kubrick. Campers can opt for Core Filmmaking Plus to start with one week of studying screenwriting and postproduction before transitioning into filmmaking.

Campers ages 14 to 18 emulate filmmaking greats Akira Kurosawa and Alfred Hitchcock in three weeks of intensive film study. Instructors use industry-grade equipment, Adobe premiere digital editing systems, and advanced techniques to help prepare campers for future pre-college film programs and film school. Campers can also opt for Advanced Filmmaking Plus, where they start with 1-3 weeks of screenwriting and move on to 3 weeks of directing, editing, and producing two films.
