Top 10 Fully Funded MFA Film Programs with Generous Stipends in the US and Canada

Even with financial aid, getting your MFA in film might be too costly. Many of the world's most prestigious film schools charge tens of thousands in tuition annually, aside from housing, food, and transportation expenses in filmmaking hubs with a high cost of living.

However, not all graduate film programs come with debt. These universities in the US and Canada offer a high-quality film education that covers tuition costs and provides a generous stipend.

Stanford's Documentary Film and Video MFA in the Department of Art & Art History is ideal for long-form storytellers passionate about transmuting real-world experiences into compelling films. In their second year, students earn full funding through Teaching Assistantships (TAs) and Teaching Fellowships (TFs), balancing instruction with developing their artistic abilities. Notably, the University offers a Knight-Hennessy Scholars program, which provides three years of full funding that includes a cost of living stipend and one annual trip to and from Stanford — no TA or TF required.

The University is widely recognized as having one of the most beautiful campuses on the West Coast thanks to its Romanesque architecture, temperate weather, and lush green spaces that define Palo Alto, one of the most desirable cities in the San Francisco Peninsula. In their first year, six students learn the fundamentals of visual storytelling ranging from shooting black-and-white 16mm film to 4K digital video, complete with an individual editing studio and ongoing production support. In the second year, students develop a 15-20-minute thesis film.

The Documentary Film and Video MFA opens up pathways to careers in independent documentary filmmaking, journalism, and hybrid media projects that incorporate elements such as virtual reality and participatory audience engagement. Students can shoot in and around downtown San Francisco, which is an hour one-way ride on the Caltrain or a 45-minute one-way drive without heavy traffic. There are plenty of artistic and cultural activities just steps on campus, like the Cantor Arts Center, a free gallery open year-round that features 38,000 works spanning 5,000 years. Cantor also boasts the largest collection of Rodin bronze sculptures outside of Paris.

Alumni have received critical acclaim and widespread industry recognition. Paloma Martinez was named one of Filmmaker magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” and has had her short documentaries, many of which she produced while at Stanford, broadcast nationally on PBS and featured on major platforms including The Guardian, The New York Times Op‑Docs, and The Atlantic. Reid Davenport won the 2022 Sundance Film Festival U.S. Documentary Directing Award for his debut feature and has since produced compelling films that explore social issues with both artistic refinement and emotional depth.

2. Northwestern University — MFA in Writing for the Screen & Stage and MFA in Documentary Media

Evanston, IL | 2 years

FilmSchool.org user @JoanCrawford says of the MFA in Writing for the Screen & Stage: “Northwestern, like NYU, utilizes a multi-medium approach; it gives you more power and breadth as the auteur. [...] Everyone is required to take a production course, sure, that's standard for writers. However, they offer you a $5,000 grant to produce one of your pieces, but it's optional and not required to graduate. [...] I think that Northwestern's Writing for Screen and Stage MFA program has so much to offer!” (Read the full review here.)

Northwestern, known as one of the “Hidden Ivies” thanks to its reported acceptance rate of only 7% and rigorous academics, offers a fully funded, two-year MFA in Writing for the Screen & Stage.

MFA in Writing for the Screen & Stage

MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage students receive a scholarship that includes a tuition waiver, a living stipend, health insurance, and a $5,000 grant to develop the thesis film. The curriculum strategically incorporates elements of screenwriting, television writing, writing for theater, and essentials of working in the industry. Each year, a cohort of around 12 MFA students collaborate on Northwestern's campus, located just steps from idyllic Clark Street Beach. By graduation, students will have completed a short screenplay, a full-length play, a television pilot, and a full-length project of their choosing. Internships in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles help recent graduates jump into industry positions. Chicago's theater and entertainment options are a short train ride away — an asset for creative exploration, shooting on a budget, and networking.

The Department of Radio/Television/Film in the School of Communication regularly hosts guest artists and industry professionals, including playwright Lynn Nottage, Pulitzer Prize winner for “Ruined” and “Sweat,” and Christine Vachon of Killer Films, who produced critically-acclaimed films such as “Party Monster” and “Boys Don’t Cry.” (To learn about how Vachon has applied her expertise to help the next generation of filmmakers, read FilmSchool.org's admissions interview with Stony Brook University). Noteworthy alumni include Sarah Gubbins, who co-created “I Love Dick” for Amazon; Will Arbery, who wrote for the smash-hit television series, “Succession;” and Sofya Levitsky-Weitz, screenwriter for the Emmy-award winning television series “The Bear.”

Like their MFA in Writing for the Screen & Stage peers, every admitted MFA in Documentary Media student receives full tuition remission, health insurance, a generous quarterly stipend, plus $5,000 to create the thesis film. This degree of financial support lays the groundwork for documentary filmmakers to rapidly grow as artists, freely experiment, and learn how to tell true stories that make a lasting impact.

Students learn how to move fluidly between formats and genres, applying documentary techniques to narrative work and narrative techniques to documentaries. They are also expected to develop a research identity alongside their craft, drawing from courses in performance studies, gender studies, art theory, journalism, and beyond, such as ‘Sensory Ethnography,’ ‘Black Visual Culture,’ and ‘Theory and History of Documentary and Ethnographic Film.’ Specialized production courses rotate annually, covering everything from 16mm filmmaking and animated documentary to true crime and field recording. Faculty are working media-makers who bring real industry experience into the classroom.

For a program that only launched in 2016, the MFA in Documentary Media has already produced remarkable alumni. Sebastián Pinzón Silva saw his thesis film “Palenque” premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, screen at MoMA and New Directors/New Films, earn a BAFTA shortlist nod, and land him on Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film. Iyabo Kwayana took her short film “By Water” to the Sundance Film Festival's Animation Short Film Program in 2023, followed by a national PBS broadcast, and is now on faculty at Dartmouth. And Resita Cox earned a Regional Emmy before her debut feature, “Freedom Hill,” a documentary about environmental racism threatening the first town chartered by freed Black Americans, premiered nationally on PBS.

The Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin is a fully funded, interdisciplinary MFA with a limited screenwriting track. For three years, screenwriting students receive full tuition, a substantial annual stipend of $30,000 in the fall and $4,000 in the summer, and multi-year financial support with no teaching duties required. The program is highly selective, admitting one or two fellows per cohort, who work alongside fiction writers, poets, and playwrights at the Michener Center in the historic J. Frank Dobie home. Students live only steps from the Harry Ransom Center, one of the world's great literary archives, and the surrounding neighborhoods are filled with eclectic coffee shops, music venues, and bookstores. (FilmSchool.org’s interview with Michener Center alumnus Kendra Daniels dives into more of the program's highlights.)

Fellows take a foundational feature-length script course, a television pilot course, and advanced workshops where they develop features or original pilots. They also take electives in UT Austin's acclaimed Radio-TV-Film department. Another major draw of the program is its close proximity to the Austin Film Festival and the internationally acclaimed South by Southwest (SXSW) film festival.

Alumni reflect the MFA program's range. Kieran Fitzgerald co-wrote Oliver Stone's "Snowden" and Tommy Lee Jones's "The Homesman," wrote Errol Morris's Netflix series "Wormwood," and is currently a co-executive producer on Amazon's "Fallout,” the hit television series based on the titular award-winning video game. Rachel Kondo went on to co-create FX's "Shogun," which celebrated a historic 18 wins at the 76th Emmy Awards.

When people think of the University of Iowa and graduate arts programs, they almost always think of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. However, Iowa's MFA in Film & Video Production is one of the most intellectually engaging fully funded graduate film MFAs in the nation. Funding is offered through TAs that waive the cost of tuition and an annual salary.

During the three-year MFA, students take at least one academic course per semester, culminating in a year-long thesis film and supporting research paper. Students are encouraged to explore creating different types of films, from documentaries to experimental, with the goal of creating unforgettable movies, digital media, multimedia installations, and animated works. Facilities include three production studios, a green screen, an audio recording studio, HD and 16mm editing labs, and a full equipment cage.

The University also supports an annual Iowa City International Documentary Film Festival (FilmScene) as well as regular on-campus screenings through the Bijou Film Board, one of the oldest student-run film organizations in the country, which has programmed independent and avant-garde cinema since 1972. Alumni have premiered films at Cannes, Slamdance, TIFF, Berlinale, and SXSW, won Student Academy Awards, and had work shown on PBS, Netflix, and Amazon Prime.

Georgia State University's MFA in Digital Filmmaking is designed for film students who want to create meaningful work in the South’s cinematic core. As one of few fully funded film MFA programs in the South, most students receive full tuition waivers and monthly stipends through teaching assistantships. As a rising production hub in America, Atlanta helps students learn the industry at a much lower cost compared to New York City and Los Angeles.

The three-year curriculum is wide in scope, training students across documentary, fiction, experimental, and advocacy filmmaking, with courses in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and sound design all building toward the thesis. In the first year, students master core skills in directing, cinematography, editing, and sound while exploring essential storytelling techniques. The second year emphasizes advanced production and the creation of ambitious short films, and the final year centers on developing a thesis film. Students can also take advantage of partnerships with the Georgia Film Academy and Trilith Studios, an impressive 700-acre complex in South Metro Atlanta and the largest purpose-built studio outside of Hollywood, with over one million square feet of production facilities and 34 premium sound stages.

The School of Film, Media & Theatre also houses the liquid blackness project, an internationally nonprofit recognized research group devoted to Black aesthetics and moving image culture. Film students are encouraged to engage with its scholarship throughout their training. For those drawn to work that sits at the intersection of urgent social issues and craft, GSU stands out.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s MFA in Writing for Dramatic Media, a three-year conservatory-style program, covers the cost of tuition in the form of graduate assistantships and an annual stipend of $21,000 for the fall, $10,500 for the spring, and $7,000 for the full summer (limited to 10 hours per week). Students can either act as Research GAs to assist faculty members on their projects, or as Teaching GAs, instructing undergraduates.

The curriculum includes courses that span film, television, and theater, challenging film students to develop narrative projects for live experience, interactive media, and location-based entertainment that capitalizes on the desert city’s dazzling live performance venues — most notably, the Las Vegas Sphere, which features a 16K-resolution wraparound interior LED screen and 4D that has attracted award-winning filmmakers such as Darren Aronofsky. By the end of the program, students must complete at least four full-length feature screenplays and two television pilot scripts.

Compared to major film hubs, Las Vegas and surrounding cities are more affordable. Nevada's film tax incentive program offers transferable credits of up to 25% (as of 2026) on qualified production expenditures, which has drawn major studio and streaming productions to the state. Film students can also benefit from working with the Nevada Film Office, which may connect them with local industry contacts.

Alumni have gone on to work in television, theater, and film. Jared Goode served as a Story Assistant on MTV’s "The Challenge" and Associate Producer on "Project Runway All Stars.” Lisa Henthorn has acted as a writer and story editor on the USA Network detective series "The Glades" and as an Associate Producer and writer on "The Beautiful Life.” Henthorn has earned script coordinating credits on television series including "Jericho” and “Ghost Whisperer.”

For applicants open to studying in Canada, Concordia's MFA in Film Production is one of the strongest fully funded options available. Funding is competitive and available in the form of tuition waivers, Fellowships up to $20,000 across the two-year program, and paid Teaching Assistantships that cover any gaps in funding. Located in Montréal, a city that feels like a slice of Europe in Canada, Concordia offers a rigorous film production curriculum with access to a diverse independent film scene.

Throughout the two-year program, students work in the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema’s professional studios, screening rooms, editing suites, and sound labs, all equipped with industry-grade cameras and equipment. In the first year, they focus on mastering foundational production techniques, experimenting with form, and completing smaller projects. The second year shifts toward ambitious, research-driven work, culminating in a thesis film that demonstrates both technical skill and deep understanding of cinema as an art form and cultural expression.

The city’s rich festival culture only enhances the student filmmaker experience. The highly prestigious Festival du nouveau cinéma has celebrated innovative and revolutionary cinema since 1971 and regularly features student work. The Fantasia International Film Festival remains one of the world's most important platforms for independent and international horror, sci-fi, and fantasy cinema. Montréal also has a notably strong public arts funding infrastructure: The Canada Council for the Arts and Téléfilm Canada both provide significant funding for independent Canadian filmmakers, including students and recent graduates.

International applicants should begin researching the Canadian student visa (Study Permit) process well in advance of their targeted start date. The Government of Canada's official Study Permit portal is the definitive resource for eligibility requirements, application steps, and processing timelines.

Ohio University School of Film

Ohio University School of Film

Offering an MA in Film Studies, an MFA in Film, and a BFA in Film.

Ohio University's MFA in Film allows students to rotate through production roles on each other’s crews and immerse themselves in their craft. Most students receive tuition waivers or significant financial aid in exchange for completing a Teaching Assistantship across three years of study. The University also offers numerous scholarships and grants for graduate students facing financial barriers, and the cost of living is extremely low — often as little as $350 per month for shared housing.

The Film Division in the Chaddock + Marrow School of Fine Arts features dedicated filmmaking facilities, including screening rooms, sound stages, and post-production and editing suites accessible 24 hours a day. Students begin by building a creative portfolio through integrated coursework in directing, screenwriting, production, sound, editing, and film studies. In the second year, they concentrate in areas such as cinematography, post-production, and documentary or narrative filmmaking. In the final year, they create the thesis film while taking advanced electives.

Though the program may not carry the brand recognition of popular East and West Coast film schools, Ohio University graduates consistently find jobs in independent film, television production, and academia, and are exposed to cinema screenings and festivals. The Athens International Film + Video Festival has showcased films by students and independent artists for 50 years, and students can catch the latest large-budget and independent films at Athena Cinema. Combined with a vibrant indie music scene, picturesque off-campus filming locations, and the Arts + Education green with upgraded buildings and facilities for Fine Arts students scheduled for completion in 2027, Ohio University is an appealing, outside-the-box choice for film students.

Kevin Jerome Everson is one of the program’s most accomplished alumni. Everson has created more than 300 shorts and feature-length films that showcase the depth and nuance of Black and working-class communities in America, such as “Black Bus Stop” and “Ears, Nose, and Throat.” His films have earned retrospectives at the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Harvard Film Archive, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities, and an American Academy in Rome Prize, among other honors.

For filmmakers drawn to experimental cinema and art, SIU Carbondale's MFA in Media Arts is worth exploring. Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships waive tuition for all three years of the program, leaving students responsible for only minor course fees. The School of Media Arts sits inside the Communications Building alongside the University's cinema and radio-television-digital media programs, creating an environment for artists who want a wide range of experiences and skills.

Every student receives a dedicated individual studio and round-the-clock access to a professional post suite, a tracking and mixing studio, a full animation and gaming lab, and the Anechoic Chamber, an entirely noiseless room that doubles as a recording and performance space. Courses like Expanded Cinema, where students create immersive live performances integrating projection, video, and audience participation, and Sound Art Studio, which explores installation, improvisation, phonography, and DIY electronics, help prepare graduates for robust careers in everything from video and film to interactive installation to glitch art.

The surrounding area offers plenty of idyllic filming locations in a shoestring budget. Consider that the city of Carbondale sits at the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest, the only national forest in Illinois, whose 280,000 acres are filled with stunning flowers, lakes, rivers, campgrounds, and the Garden of the Gods, a famous trail of sandstone bluffs. Plus, Chicago is about five hours north on I-57 for networking and access to film festivals.

The program's alumni reflect its commitment to extraordinary media creations. Jordan Faye Bardgett combines photography, sound, glitch art, and performance to explore transgender identity and memory; her compelling experimental short film "Transist" screened at the Fringe Queer Film & Arts Festival in London. Leah Sutton is now a Professor of Digital Media at Greenville University and recently presented work at the College Book Arts Association National Conference, with a solo exhibition forthcoming at Kishwaukee College Art Gallery in 2027.

UC Riverside's MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts is a two-year program that offers generous funding in the form of a first-year full fellowship and stipend up to around $12,000. (There is no individual fellowship application.) In the second year, students can continue to receive full funding by applying for a one-course TA position, which pays $2,582 per month, waives tuition, and covers all but $200 of the quarterly fees.

Note that TA positions are not guaranteed, but are instead awarded based on academic merit, professionalism, teaching potential, and consistent outstanding participation in the film MFA program. In the beginning of their second year, selected TAs enroll in CWPA 301, a practicum that prepares them to teach introductory undergraduate creative writing and theater courses. Each year, two students with extraordinary creative skills and a promising future publication, play, or film are nominated for a fully funded third year of study.

The program offers genre concentrations in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, screenwriting, and playwriting, each culminating in a thesis novel, memoir, essay collection, screenplay, or full-length play. While students apply to specialize in one genre, they are encouraged to apply their skills and knowledge to related genres and narrative forms, such as transferring screenwriting to writing fiction or nonfiction. Students also take complementary courses in Hispanic studies, comparative literature, and other related subjects.

Located just 50 miles east of Los Angeles, UC Riverside's campus offers the ideal blend of close proximity to the industry and affordability compared to other Southern California film schools. Students can volunteer and enjoy four miles of trails in the impressive UCR Botanic Gardens. They can also participate in student organizations such as R'Shorts, a filmmaking club focused on screenwriting, cinematography, directing, and post-production where members build portfolios and network. And the UCR Writers Week Festival, now in its 49th year, welcomes a rotating roster of celebrated writers, such as Maggie Nelson, Sarah Manguso, Geoffrey Dyer, and Bret Anthony Johnston.

Faculty bring valuable industry experience to the classroom. Screenwriting professor Stu Krieger wrote ten original movies for Disney Channel, including “Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century” and its two sequels, along with the animated classic “The Land Before Time” for Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Playwriting and screenwriting professor Rickerby Hinds is a trailblazer who introduced the world to hip-hop theater with his masterwork “Daze to Come” in 1989; his play “Dreamscape” won three NAACP Theatre Awards and was adapted into the award-winning film “My Name Is Myeisha.”

Full funding is just one path to a debt-free film MFA

Fully funded MFA film programs are limited and can be extremely competitive. However, graduate applicants with strong academic and creative potential should apply. These fully funded graduate film programs offer not only more financial freedom, but also the ability to focus on authentic artistry, experimentation, networking, internships, and long-term creative growth.

If you’re curious about how much film school costs, read “How to Save Thousands on Your Film School Degree.” Fully funded MFAs aren’t the only way to avoid student debt — a combination of internal and external scholarships may be within reach to significantly reduce the total cost of attendance.
