Sweden has a lot to offer when it comes to filmmaking courses and programs. Some of them have even created big names in the industry, like Roy Andersson and Ruben Östlund.

As a Swede myself, I have attended several of them. So below I have collected the top 4 film schools in my country for international students (at least in my opinion). I will also show you what they offer and how to apply.

Enjoy!

Stockholm Filmschool

Stockholm Filmschool offers a one to two-year program in practical filmmaking. Here, you will learn screenwriting, producing, directing, and post-production. The school provides two studios where you can build sets and an array of equipment and cameras.

They also offer a shorter "INTENZIO" course in Swedish or English for international students. In this course, you get to write, develop and shoot your own short in about 3-months.

My only experience with this school is with their INTEZIO course. Even though it was 10 weeks long, I felt like I didn't get as much out of it as when I attended a full-year program. A lot will depend on the teacher and the experience levels of your fellow students.

Having said that, their full-year program has an excellent reputation for both Swedish and international students.

Tuition and cost:
Currently, the tuition for the full-year program is 9000€ per year. For the standalone INTENZIO program, it is about 3000€.

How to Apply:
To apply, follow these links below, and you will find the application forms:

Full year-program: INTERNATIONAL FILM PRODUCTION PROGRAM

INTEZIO course: INTENZIO - 10 weeks intensive course in filmmaking

Kulturama

Kulturama's film production program focuses on practical learning through several short film projects. It is very similar to Stockholm Filmschool.

From my experience, all the teachers there currently work in the film industry, so their connections and insights are invaluable. We also had many guest lecturers throughout their year who gave us industry tips and insights on how to start a career.

Tuition and cost:
Currently, the tuition for the full-year program is about 9400€ per year.

How to Apply:
I could not find the application page in English. That is also why this option is second on the list. It seems that Stockholm Filmschool does a better job of targeting international students.

But there should be no problem applying if you can find accommodation and manage living expenses. Here is the application page: Heltidsutbildning i film | Kulturama Filmskola

Stockholm University of Arts

Stockholm University of Arts is another great option. Located in the capital and with a lot of history, it has produced many successful directors, screenwriters, and other creatives.

It's pretty hard to get in. Hundreds apply yearly, but they usually only accept 3-5 applicants. In other words, you need to have some experience with filmmaking and some solid work to show them before applying.

Tuition and cost:
If you are either a Swedish citizen or a citizen of another EEA country, you are not required to pay application or tuition fees. However, you will have to find accommodation and pay for living expenses.

Programs and Courses Offered:
They offer four bachelor's programs related to film. All of these are highly regarded, but their directing program is the most popular. Here is the complete list:

Directing: Become a director, directing, become a documentary director, become a film director

Screenwriting and Production: Film education, car screenwriter, become concept designer, become producer

Sound Design and Editing: Become a film editor, become a film sound designer, film education, film editing, film sound

Sound Design: Sound Design - Bachelor

Stockholm University of Arts also offers some standalone courses and master's programs. You can find more info on those on their website.

How to apply:
You can apply through the Swedish University Admissions agency:

The application process requires you to attend interviews and submit an application assignment. You can find the instructions for each program on their respective page.

Gothenburg University

Gothenburg University is also highly regarded for its filmmaking education. Unlike Stockholm University of Arts, they offer only one filmmaking bachelor's program where you can focus on different areas of interest.

In addition, they offer a master's program in English. You can read more about their programs here: Film

A famous attendee of Gothenburg university is Ruben Östlund. A Swedish director who has won awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Palme d'Or.

Tuition and cost:
Again, if you are either a Swedish citizen or a citizen of another EEA country, you are not required to pay application or tuition fees. But you still have to find accommodation and pay for living expenses.
