My Second Year at Stony Brook

I'm checking into FilmSchool.org during one of my very few nights off. I'm streaming THE WRONG PARIS on Netflix and it's hitting all it's Netflix Original marks. I would love to write one of these films. But first I have several other original fantasy and dark comedy projects I have to attend to, and they might be too niche for Netflix. I'd love for them to be distributed through Mubi. (that is some real talk about my creative goals).

The most notable thing about my Year 2 (I'm 3 weeks in) at Stony Brook is that I'm also teaching undergrads this year. So after a week of classes in producing, directing and writing, I head to Long Island to teach the basics of film to undergrads who are future software engineers among other majors.

My classes:

Writing the Short 2 -- this is a 5 week class, it feels like it might be a better summer class? we watch short films and discuss the short scripts we're writing (which we'll use in Directing 2 and Production 2). We were told by another instructor to come to the class with completed scripts but when we got to the first class we were only expected to have ideas. Probably some communication issues there.

Producing - Remote class. I tried to get out of taking this class as a screenwriter, but it was required if I want to take Production 2 (and direct my 3rd short in the program). I was so annoyed but by the end of the first class I knew I was in the right place to learn about the basics of independent production. I look forward to this class now.

Directing 2 - just started this one last Wednesday. It's a 4 hour class so we only meet 12 times this semester. We focus on one scene from our Production 2 scripts and work with different actors to interpret it. We go 4 students per class to bring in actors and run the scenes. Also, we're reading Directing Actors by Judith Weston.

Screenwriting 2 - We've all picked up where we left off in Screenwriting 1 - the beginning of the second act. People take turns turning in pages and getting feedback. A standard accountability workshop. I can't say I feel like a better writer because of this class. But I can say that I got pages turned in by the deadline.

The creative focus is on our Production 2 live-action short and our feature script.

That's the rundown of this semester... any questions?
