That’s a wrap on my first year of graduate film school at Stony Brook.

Last night, our class screened our rough cuts for our Production 1 films. We had snacks and cheered and some people had to rush off to help a third-year work on his thesis film.

I’m mostly happy with what got shot and I think the whole short will be made in post-production. Principal photography was really about getting the raw material shot and now the magic is in the editing of it.

My “rough cut” I screened last night is not something I’d show the general public because it was just me rushing to cut something together on the few days I had available to do it. I was one of four students to actually turn it in on time. This is definitely a demanding program.

The most notable thing about my SLEEPING MOTHER shoot, which was almost a month ago now, was that the kid actors were total pros and both shoot days we wrapped early.

I was pretty miserable for a few days in pre-production but production itself went very well and after we wrapped I was buzzing. I’m really hoping I can make something good out of it and use it as a proof of concept for a feature.

My short from last semester (TASTE) is *so close* to being finished, I just have a last bit of notes to give about the levels of music. I’m really happy with it— much happier than I was right after I shot it. Again, I think films really get made in post and I just proved that to myself.

Another cool thing that happened is that I had two pro actors come into my Directing Actors class and act out a scene from an original pilot I wrote prior to entering the program. We ran the scene 2 times, then got notes from the class, then did it twice more.

Speaking of TV writing, something frustrating I found out is that if I want to take Production 2, it’s required for me to take a Producing class next semester which means I can’t take the elective TV writing without paying extra. I’ve found myself essentially on the directing track. Depending on how next year goes, I may officially switch from Screenwriting to Directing.

Moments ago I turned in my final portfolio for the elective Teaching Practicum and also about a week ago I was offered a job teaching FILM 101 to Stony Brook undergrads. Since it’s an arts elective, it will have all different majors in the class. I hope my students will be engaged and excited to learn about film despite not being film majors.

Next semester will be a lot to handle again, especially with my teaching gig all the way out on Long Island, but I’ll be sure to take lots of time this summer to do what I’d usually prefer doing: writing on my couch in my pajamas.
