Icebreakers What film have you seen recently?

My unlimited movie pass brought me to Rythm Section tonight. Meh.

The only really cool thing in it was the car chase shot in what looks like a continuous take from inside the car. That was pretty neat.

What have you seen?

I saw Uncut Gems for the third time on Saturday - I wanted a friend to see it and it had the extra Q&A attached to the end of the film. It's still a complete thrill ride. There's nothing to be said about Sandler in this film that hasn't already been said, it's a consummate role and he devours it. The script is airtight and lean as hell while managing to keep so many threads active, engaging, and unpredictable. I was so immersed in it that it took me until this third viewing to notice some J-cuts in the climactic betting sequence. I don't know why this blew my mind, but it did. It's rare that the world of a film is so loaded with information and detail that the artifice and mechanics of it all completely fade away, even on subsequent viewings. I've loved the Safdies since Good Time and I can't wait to see what they do next. Uncut Gems, Marriage Story, and Parasite are all tied for my top three of 2019 for sure.

Uncut Gems, Marriage Story
Still have to see those but Marriage Story seems rather depressing so I've been avoiding it. Is it as a depressing relationship movie as Closer? Ha that's the all time high "not a good first date movie".

Speaking of date movies I've been dying laughing at the Lovebirds preview at the theater recently.

I think American Factory and Marriage Story are next for me. I think I know someone with a screener on Uncut Gems or I might just rent it.

I saw the Lovebirds trailer in theaters yesterday, it looks like a lot of fun. I think Marriage Story is bittersweet. It's definitely an emotional experience, but I thought it was pretty cleansing, if that makes sense. It was a really complete exploration of divorce and what I would call vestigial love. The relationship between the leads is hard to sum up as extinguished love, or an ongoing love, it's like two trees who shared the same soil and found their roots tangled together when they were uprooted. There's always going to be some of you in them, and some of them in you. It's also really hilarious at points.

Saw American Factory on Netflix last night. Well that's a lie. I fell asleep watching it the night before so I finished it last night.

It was well done but subject matter depressing in the state of wages and the future of manufacturing and employment in the US. I guess that's the whole point... to inspire people to work on the solution.

Might watch Marriage Story tonight.

Still trying to watch Marriage Story - halfway through.

But I watched Clue with my kids this weekend. Still hilarious.

Not a film but watching The Outsider right now. I'm really enjoying the cinematography and editing. A lot of long shots with rack focuses for most of the scene. It's very refreshing and works well for the thriller suspense aspect of the show.

Good stuff.
