Alan Bye (Chapman University Dodge College of Film and Media Arts MFA '21) on Building a Career in Children's Animation Writing

From early childhood, Alan Bye (@alanray) knew that he would end up working in film. The medium was always integral to his passions and way of life. Bye received his BA in Theory and Practice of Cinema with a specialization in Screenwriting from California State University Long Beach in 2019...

Get an email back from admission, saying that “Interviews are not required for any of our programs. if you are not invited for an interview, this does not mean you are not still in consideration.” So not too much useful information, I believe interviews is a must in the past years, but still wandering what happens this year.
got the same reply...

Still waiting. It has been two weeks since the first patch of interview invitations and I believe there weren’t a lot students interviewed so.(~20, I guess). I got an email directly from Dodge saying my application is still under reviewing. I guess we won’t hear anything until the last day of the current interview schedule, which is next Thursday.

I wonder will all the interview invitations be sent in Feb.

Has anyone that applied for screenwriting interviewed yet?
I interviewed for screenwriting last Tuesday! Very conversational 30 minute interview with a few current Chapman screenwriting professors mostly wanting to know why I was interested in the program, what some of my career/creative goals were... the standard questions.

I applied to Dodge’s Directing MFA a couple of days before the December 1st deadline and got an interview invitation the night of February 3rd (I live in the US). I had my interview yesterday and it went really well, it was supposed to only be 30 minutes but it ended up being closer to an hour.

Hi! Did you notice that how many slots are taken in total approximately? Just wandering how many interviewees are there in this first round.

I honestly couldn't tell you how many people they interviewed for the first round, I picked one of the later slots so I can't look back and see how many of the previous slots were taken because they aren't available on the calendar anymore. They just told me in the email and during the interview that they don't give interview invites to everyone, so I'm guessing it's a relatively small number out of the total number of applicants. All I can say is that the decisions for the first round will likely come out around March 15th since they told me they would give me a decision in a few weeks, and I'm guessing they'll probably do another round of interviews soon after.

I was just contacted to interview for the Screenwriting program. Looks like there are loads of slots left open there over the next few days. Better late than never.
Yeah from what I've read every program is different in terms of selectivity, how many applicants get interviews, and when those interview invites happen, and of course a lot of that depends on how many applicants are applying to each program, and I'm sure that all changes from year to year. Also from what I've read for some programs, it's possible to get admitted without an interview, at least that's what I've read for Dodge's screenwriting program. Good luck with the interview!
