The Graduate MFA degree is a filmmaking track integrated within the Art and Art History /Arts Practices MFA program in much the same way as the tracks in painting and drawing, ceramics, sculpture, media arts, integrated arts and printmaking. The MFA in Film is an interdisciplinary endeavor between the Art and Art History Department and the Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts Departmen, and offers the best of both worlds, allowing graduate students to work in various mediums, in addition to their area of specialization. We welcome applications from emerging filmmakers and moving image artists interested in creating fiction, non-fiction, or hybrid cinema, animation, moving image installations, media performance or hybrid time-based works from single channel to the white cube gallery and beyond.n All Film MFAs have studios among their graduate cohort in the Visual Arts Building.
As with most MFA programs admission is by portfolio, so we will be looking at your protfolio to get a sense of your personal authorship, style, and artistic interests.
The portfolio requiements for AP/Film give you up to 20 samples--this includes your single channel film/video clips (3 min limit--but you can include a url for longer forms).
If you work in installation, sound, web, performance, text, or any 2D/3D area you can feel free to include that work as well, and if you are collaborating please note your contribution specifically.
Please do not send a commercial reel. We are a research university, not a commercially focussed environment. We are looking for individually authored works in film, video and moving image.
All admitted students will receive an offer form the University Graduate School delineating tuition remissions, job placement as per dept. availability, and salaries for such employment.
We strive for full tuition remission, and try to come as close to this as possible. Because of this committment we only take a few admitted students in each discipline.
