The process was easy compared to directing discipline. they needed a narrative statement, unofficial transcript, and 2 samples of film you edited (20 minutes or less).
I felt the application process was very straightforward and easy to complete. I submitted the application a day before the deadline to make sure my letters of rec had enough time to complete their letters. I heard back from the admissions requesting an interview for Jan 26th.
Stressful! DUH. I applied to UCLA, USC, AFI, and Cal Arts. Making the materials was mostly fun but I had an animation project literally fall apart without time to correct so I had to create a new concept close to the deadline. That wasn't the worst part, the worst part was watching my essays...
So far, so good! Very excited to get an interview but nervous as this is my first year at applying to any MFAs. I thought my supplements were both a bit risky but I guess it paid off (for now at least)! Also, a small thing, but I've found the AFI admissions office to be so warm and helpful...
It was a pretty strenuous application, but only because I wanted to make sure it was good. Worked on the personal statement for at least two months. Other than my own perfectionism, they really weren't asking all that much; a personal statement, a portfolio sample and accompanying essay, and an...
I tried to get it done as soon as possible to not worry about it. Really focused on the personal statement and making my application video as personal as possible.
Some film programs such as Columbia and AFI are very expensive.
Yeah... That price tag is nuts. I mean the education sounds awesome but...Did you see this article?

This process has been very smooth thus far. I submitted two recent short films for my portfolio. My personal statement took more time, but I feel good about it.
Honestly, the whole process has been pretty taxing for me. I applied to all the programs I had applied to and I wasn't quite happy with my portfolio. In the month of November, I made two shorts that I am pretty happy with in hopes that they would boost my chances of getting into programs. That...
Hello everyone!
Update on the application process. Just received an email from AFI to schedule an interview for next week. So Excited! :) Anyone else has any news?
Any tips for the interview? Any questions you guys know I should prepare?
Thank you!
Very straightforward process. Their application is very easy to follow. I'm just a bit anxious about the portfolio because I'm not sure what they were looking for exactly. I tried including a bit of everything.
Hi everyone! If you're like me, you've spent hours looking into different film schools trying to see what MA/MFA may be best for you and worth applying to. It is also a fact that grad programs can be very competitive, and while there are so many I want to apply to, I also don't want to spread...
This one was tricky, but I'm really happy with what I came up with. Not sure if the scene prompt was the kind of thing they were looking for, but I really enjoyed writing it.
Hi everyone!!! Hope you are all doing well! ;) I'm Carolina and I'm from Portugal! It's been a long journey of being an International student applying for a USA school, in this case, AFI.
I would like that someone could help me figure out how can I still get the Master degree (if I'm accepted...
Hello,
I am interested in schools in the US for a master's program in directing and I would like to know the major difference between AFI, USC, and NY Arts tisch because I feel like only AFI really explains what you will do with your master's years while the other schools I feel like only...
Hi, we are a group of film students from AFI. We are now raising money for our thesis film: XIA'S NOODLE HOUSE.
The budget for shooting this short film in LA is estimated at $58,000. Even though our school covers part of the budget, the rest amount is still far more than we can afford as...
Hi all, long time commenter/lurker and first time poster here.
I find myself in the really fortunate and unexpected position of having been admitted to both USC and AFI for Fall 2021 and I’m in the process of figuring out which one to commit to. Since I am always bowled over by the insights and...
