Pretty well! I enjoyed filling this one out more than the others for some reason. Probably because I liked having more pages for my personal essay. It's hard to put together something that you think captures who you are as a prospective student.
Application process was a little different than others mainly because they have a unique personal statement prompt, which asks you to describe 1-2 experiences in your life that lead you to writing. I liked the scene prompts this year. Because the program is new this year, I didn't have as much...
Hi, all!
I'm international and applying to NYU, USC, and Columbia. My top priorities are USC and NYU. I had an interview for USC last week for the spring semester and I'm researching to prepare if I get accepted to USC. I found some information that somewhat bothers me. NYU is my dream school...
At Columbia University School of the Arts, film is approached as storytelling in motion. Filmmakers learn future-forward visual and narrative filmmaking techniques while mastering the technicalities and business aspects of the industry. In 2023, The Hollywood Reporter also ranked the ivy league...

Hi guys
I am in the incredibly lucky position where I got into four amazing film programs.
I took an oversea trip to visit all four schools thinking I would be able to know which school is right for me after my visits.
But I am now three days away from
the commitment deadline, and I...
Hi! I know this has been discussed a lot but I figured it couldn't hurt to get some updated opinions. I've been lucky enough to get accepted to both nyu and columbia and the decision really has me stressing out. Does anyone know what they would choose between the two? My goal is to be a...
The application itself was highly writing-intensive, but I enjoyed the prompts given.
I feel strongly about my application. I’m graduating this summer from undergrad, so hopefully I can just move on straight to grad school.
Anxiously waiting for the decision after being interviewed on 2022-03-01. This is my second time applying for Columbia Directing/Screenwriting program. Finger crossed.
Columbia was my strongest application and my favorite from the start. My two page script was based off of a conversation I had had at my Uncle’s wedding and the first ten pages of screenplay were based on a Western I wrote with my screenwriting friend from Chapman.
In response to the Wall St. Journal article ‘Financially Hobbled for Life’: The Elite Master’s Degrees That Don’t Pay Off, Dean Carol has posted a response on Columbia's website:
"Dear School of the Arts Community:
I am writing in response to yesterday’s Wall Street Journal article about...
Attending Columbia is my top choice. I've spoken with faculty and students alike and I cannot comprehend another school I'd rather attend. It's curriculum is great, faculty members are exceedingly joyful to talk shop with, and its based in an area closer to my friends and family. What's not to...
Required Materials:
- 3 Letters of Recommendation (all of mine were from professors I had in production courses, but I think a professional rec would've been good.
- Dramatic Writing Sample (page limit of three iirc)
- Film Prompt
- Film Treatment (not gonna lie, it was hard to get this down...
I feel so nervous. I have only been requested to interview for AFI so far. I'm still waiting to hear back from USC (Stark and Production as a Producer) and Columbia.
Anyone else start interviews for these schools?
Some film programs such as Columbia and AFI are very expensive.
Yeah... That price tag is nuts. I mean the education sounds awesome but...Did you see this article?

I am just now adding this to the database, but finished the application a few weeks ago. The application went pretty well. I really enjoyed writing the material for it. I don't feel awesome about my autobiographical essay and think that it definitely could've used a lot of workshopping and...
I submitted this application a couple weeks ago. I thought the process went fine and was eager to get this final application done, only to discover after the fact that I formatted my writing samples wrong. (A lesson from this first time through applying to MFAs has been to thoroughly review the...
Lots of writing! Proud of both of the screenplays I wrote (the film prompt and the dramatic writing sample). Fitting the feature film treatment on a single double-spaced page in Courier font was difficult, but I got it in the end. I wish the autobiographical essay had more of a prompt.
