1917 is a technical masterpiece, but it lacks story and character development. The one continuous shot attempt sometimes comes off as a gimmick, but I still really enjoyed the film.

It reminded me of Dunkirk. The story is lacking, that's why it might not win in terms of screenplay but it would probably win in the cinematography, editing, best picture and best director category. But what do you guys think about the Joker being nominated? I am a fan of the acting and score but I disliked everything else. And I feel some movies were nominated because of the Academy's nostalgia towards certain filmmakers, not making way for newer filmmakers that had really good works to be nominated.

I'm not a fan. To me the whole movie felt like HEY LOOK AT ME I'M TRYING TO WIN AN OSCAR... I just felt like it was trying too hard. I wasn't a huge fan of his performance for the same reason.

I agree that the story and characters in Dunkirk are lacking but I felt much more immersed while watching Dunkirk and Nolan never attempted to develop these characters. Nolan's version of war entails people showing up and subsequently dying.
The 1917 screenplay tries to develop both soldiers, but I felt it was forced and came off as melodramatic. Since I consider the film lacking in these departments, I personally think only Roger Deakins should win cinematography. Directing wise, I prefer Parasite / Once Upon / Irishman much more. Won't surprise me if 1917 wins Best Picture, but I don't think it's deserving of the award.
Honestly loved Joker. Acting, cinematography, editing, directing. Could've done with a better screenplay (some stuff was too on the nose) and the constant Bruce Wayne references bothered me.
My favorite film of the year was Marriage Story and I sincerely hope it wins an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

My favourite film of the year was Little Women. I’ve read the book and watched most of the adaptations and was still shocked as to the storyline of the movie. I also loved Knives Out, I was literally at the edge of my seat, sweating in the cold cinema while watching it. Sad it was nominated for Best Original Screenplay only, I thought it has great cinematography especially what they did with the actors that had glasses on .

I saw 1917 and it is a masterpiece of cinema.

Saw 1917 in the theatres tonight. Incredible that they were able to film it. Pretty amazing choreographing and planning and set design to pull it off.

As an editor though I kept finding myself getting pulled out of the story as I kept trying to analyze how they were doing everything so the gimmick worked against the story in that regard. But pretty amazing filmmaking.

The premise confused me though. Urgent message to stop the massacre of 1600 soldiers? I thought during WW1 that was called Tuesday.

My favorite film of the year was Marriage Story and I sincerely hope it wins an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
I also loved Knives Out, I was literally at the edge of my seat,

I'll have to check those out. I wanted to see Knives Out but missed when it was in the theatres. I'll have to borrow a screener.
