AFI 2024 - All Applicants

Big congratulations to you! You must be an amazing writer. You have done so well on your application round. I can’t imagine how you begin to choose but I wish you success on your journey whichever great place you go!
Thank you so much for this! This is so nice. It's a very difficult decision. I'm actually in my last semester of undergrad and this is my first time applying, so I'm surprised I've gotten this far. Honestly I don't know what I would have done without this site; it's been so nice being able to talk to other applicants especially during the waiting process!

Congrats everyone! (And don't give up if you didn't get in) It takes multiple times sometimes.

See this article for encouragement:

So...you’re applying for film school, huh? I mean, that’s just my assumption. Not sure why you would bother reading this otherwise, especially with where we are currently in The Cycle of Applications. These next couple weeks are pretty much when all the major film school programs have their...

Everyone be sure to log your applications if you haven't yet! (Whatever your status is)

Hi I got waitlisted from directing and I'm feeling pretty confused on how to feel... Does anyone know the stats about waitlists and the chances of getting in? Do you get a notification if you don't get in from the waitlist and how long should I wait to hear back?
Our acceptance statistics have that percentage that is reported here.

I got waitlisted for screenwriting. Waht does that mean? How good are the chances to get in and make it after this point? I had a really great interview but I told them that I would not be able to make it if I don't get a full funded scholarship. Do you think thta could be one of the reasons to not get accepted??

I don’t think that would have been a reason at all to not get accepted. I have seen very few full scholarships offered in all honesty, but I’m sure they’re given on merit and need (if they say means tested) and wouldn’t act as a negative in your application.

I also don’t think it would affect your position on the waiting list, however I guess that the chance of obtaining said scholarship from the institution would be lower now. Have you considered applying to those in your home nation too? I’ve also been placed on the waitlist but was offered a scholarship from BAFTA as an ‘international scholar’ prior to hearing about whether I had a place or not.

How good are the chances to get in now, in the screenwriters program after being waitlisted??

I have no idea on that one. I feel if you were to e-mail them they wouldn’t answer either as it’s very much a ‘how long is a piece of string’ question (and trust me, I’d love the answer too).

It depends on the people who are accepted, and whether they can afford it, whether they get their scholarships, have multiple offers and pick the AFI over others, real life commitments etc.

I would guess that there is a chance, otherwise the waitlist wouldn’t exist, but whether that is 50% or 5% I don’t know.

I don’t think finances is a reason to not get accepted. I’m waitlisted and my education is paid by veteran affairs.

Do you mind saying more about the BAFTA scholarship? I've never applied for external scholarships before and I'm super confused if I should still be looking into them now that I'm waitlisted. I don't want to sound dumb but I wasn't even sure if I could apply for scholarships without getting accepted first (except for governmental loans/scholarships)
