AFI 2024 - All Applicants

Hi everyone! I just got done with my interview. They actually mean it when they say it's conversational. I didn't feel there were any gotcha moments, they understood how stressed I felt and tried their best to put me at ease. I think their main goal was to get to know who I was in that short amount of time. I truly enjoyed my conversation with them, and if I do get through I hope to see some of you. Best of luck!

Hey good on you! What's your discipline?

Congratulations, Ares! Would you mind sharing some of the questions they asked during the interview? many thx!!

I was giving it to today to hold my hopes out for an interview for directing. Seems like it must've just been a highly competitive year for that discipline! Congrats to those who got interviews, wish you the best of luck. Keep this thread updated I'm curious to hear how they go.

I totally understand your feelings. I felt similar not hearing in the first 2 waves of Screenwriting, but then it came. Give it at least another week before you give up all hope. Who knows maybe something happened. There are people on here who’ve heard in early February before it’s totally still possible!

And if it doesn’t happen that’s okay too. It’s not your worth. Just find the lessons you can learn and move forward with growth.

I'm close friends with someone who got into the cinematography track last year, and he's connected me with other people at AFI and here's what I've gleaned from those conversations:
  • Very few (if any) applicants who get an interview aren't accepted or at least waitlisted. Seems that it's more of a "vibe check" than a competitive advancing round. So if you've scheduled an interview, that's really good news
  • There's always a good number of applicants who are accepted but don't end up attending (can't afford, don't want to take out student loans, get accepted to two tracks and have to pick one, decide to go somewhere else, etc.) That's what the waitlist and later interviews are for. The money really seems to be the big issue for most people who rescind their acceptance
  • About 1/3 of the student body is American, 1/3 is Chinese, and 1/3 is from any other country. Do with that info what you will
  • Every track does their application/ interview/ acceptance process separately. So if you apply for directing and screenwriting, for example, they won't know. They also send them out and schedule the interviews separately. So it won't hurt your chances to apply for more than one track. In fact, a lot of this year's Editing students actually want to be directors but took what they got accepted for, and I guess that's caused a lot of issues lol
That's about the main takeaways for the application/interview section. I've got more info about how the school actually works once you get in, if anyone is interested.

That would be super helpful to people. :) Lots of great info in your post.

Thank You! Now that the adrenaline high has worn off, I'm already bracing for impact 😂. The interview started off based on my narrative statement, then moved on to why AFI and then discipline-specific questions about the samples. That's pretty much it.

Did you check your spam? You should've gotten the link a day prior. Best of luck!

Had to call the office numerous times, finally got the link after a nice lady at the admissions office solved the situation. The interview went well, i was asked about my commitment to AFI and visa questions seeing as i am an international student. The meeting was much more laid back than expected. Good luck everyone!!!

Just did my interview for the PD track today and it was honestly a lot more laidback than I was expecting! They were super warm and welcoming and honestly just want to know what you’re like beyond your application. Good luck to everyone!
Congrats! Glad it went well. Don't forget to log your application in our database! It's very helpful to people and helps make our acceptance data more accurate. :)

FYI AFI Production Design deadline extended to 8:59 p.m. PT (11:59 p.m. ET) on April 1, 2024

Got this email from AFI:

"If you’re looking to apply to the Production Design MFA for Fall 2024, the AFI Conservatory has officially extended the application deadline! Online applications and portfolio requirements are due by 8:59 p.m. PT (11:59 p.m. ET) on April 1, 2024. Don’t miss your chance to submit your application to the #1 film school in the nation!"

Hey everyone, I had my interview for screenwriting a few days ago with Ed Decter and Michael Urban. It went really well and they were very casual. They ask a lot of tailored questions to you. For me, it was all about my playwriting background and how that translates to screenwriting.
