Does anybody know how big the waitlist usually is, specifically for cinematography?
Not sure... But we have some data on the forum members who get accepted off wait-list on page below:

I don’t have an exact number, but I do know they usually accept 2-3 over what they actually want because they expect a few people to not accept admission for financial or visa reasons. So, if I had to best guess the waitlist isn’t much larger than 5 students maybe less.

We had them offer writers deferment in August of last year because they admitted 28 and only 1 didn’t accept but their ideal cohort is 24. 1 deferred and my class of writer is 26 so we had to co-write each cycle.

My cine friend deferred the prior year for the same reason and started in my cohort.

So they definitely keep margins thin but with enough padding to make sure they hit their sweet spot.

You sure? because last year I couldn't secure my visa, and they didn't defer my admission, so I had to apply again this year.

How did they defer? I thought AFI was very strict about not letting anyone defer exactly because they have the ideal size for each class

Didn't get in for directing... :( Oh well; here's hoping for next year.
On another note, I did my undergrad in film SCORING. So, if any of you need a composer for your projects at AFI, hit me up!! I work in pretty much all styles and would love to work with you all on on music for your films. I'm pretty good I think! :-)
My instagram is @tyler.r.jenkins !

They offered special deferment because the class size was too large. I believe this is the only way they offer deferment. I can share the email I received asking writers to defer last year if you’d like.

They only offer deferment when they over admit. This is what happened with my writing cohort and the cinematography cohort the year prior. Otherwise they are strict about not letting people defer. It’s only if they mess up basically. Usually editing and production design have less than the rest so they don’t ever have these opportunities. That’s why you couldn’t.

Do you think this over accepting hurts chances of getting off the waitlist?

Is there an AFI Admitted Students thread? Having trouble finding it
There's a private thread here:

If anyone is accepted anywhere else and wants to create a private thread for another program feel free if there isn't one yet.
