AFI Waitlist Support Group - 2023

Anybody here on the waitlist for the upcoming AFI 2023 term? If so, have you heard back at all?

I've been feeling the perpetual state of purgatory limbo... starting to accept the fact that I won't be getting in :/

I think in most cases some waitlist admissions go out after the deadline for admitted students to accept or decline their enrollment. I’m not certain the date but it’s likely it was yesterday. Some people have multiple options and may decline, opening spots up for the school to return to the waitlist. I don’t remember how many are accepted for cinematography, but I seem to remember 28 being thrown around a lot a couple of years ago for other disciplines. Depending on how things are set up, it may be a quick decision for the admissions committee, or they may have to go back over applications for a bit to see who fits best with the cohort.

Either way, I definitely don’t think it’s weird you haven’t heard anything yet. Don’t panic too much~ :) In fact, I feel it’s a little early for a waitlist acceptance to come through. Most of the people on this site who were later admitted off of the waitlist didn’t hear back until late April, May, June, or July. Another school didn’t let me know until the start of August one year. It’s pretty much just a waiting game, unfortunately.

Even if you don’t get pulled off of the waitlist this cycle, you can always reapply in a few months. Getting waitlisted is an accomplishment in itself (even though it doesn’t feel like it sometimes haha) and it means they wanted you. They just didn’t have quite enough space this time around. That might change on a second round of applications :)

Yes the admissions statistics page for AFI will show the earliest off waitlist date and you can also sort by admitted off waitlist date in the application database. 👍
