Any film schools where students can make a feature film?

I read an interview with Black List founder and CEO Franklin Leonard in which he said, "Film schools encourage students to make their final project a feature.”

Which film schools allow or encourage their students to make feature length films in school? I only know about programs where students make shorts. Where I was an undergraduate, I know the grad students made a short called a pre-thesis in their second year, and another short called a thesis in their final year.

Are their grad programs that allow students to make features as thesis films?

They might be referring to screenplays, I think it’s pretty standard for screenwriting majors to write a feature as their thesis, at least it was for the two colleges I studied undergrad at.

This could also be students being encouraged to take their short thesis and make it into a feature later on, outside of their program.

He could have meant to make your final project a feature after you graduate. It's not clear from how he is phrasing it.

I don't think you're going to find a program where students make feature films. MFA programs in directing/film production are typically 2-3 years and that's just not enough time to make a feature film. Plus, funding a feature will be very difficult to do. I know UCLA's Directing program is 3-4 years and the thesis project is a short film no more than 30 min.

Leonard is most likely referring to adapting your thesis short into a feature after you graduate. For example, Daniel Cretton's thesis project "Short Term 12" did well at Sundance and was later adapted into a feature film.

Keep in mind there are some schools that own the rights to your thesis film. So just do your research. I'm sure someone on this site can speak more on that.

Here is a post from last year that discusses feature films during an MFA program. Which MFA programs let you make a feature film?
