Feirstein is great!! I’ve taken a few classes there and love it! I’m applying too
Please post a review here:

Brooklyn College (CUNY) - Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema

Brooklyn College is excellent for film school students interested in taking advantage of New York’s independent film scene while watching their budgets. The film school offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines intensive academic study with hands-on learning. Plus, the program...

That would be helpful to people. :)

I also applied to Ferstein! When did you submit your application?
Well I submitted in January but I had to get my bachelors certificate translated twice, because if a misunderstanding. And that took a couple of weeks. I guess they reviewed my application in spite of the document not being 100% correct.

Good luck with your upcoming interview! I also submitted my application in January but haven't heard back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi everyone! Got my acceptance notification yesterday afternoon. Anyone else? Would love to hear everyone’s opinion on the program
Congrats! Be sure to log your application in our database. :

Hi everyone! Got my acceptance notification yesterday afternoon. Anyone else? Would love to hear everyone’s opinion on the program
Congratulations! I mentioned above but I will be attending next year. That said, I of course haven't started the program yet so take what I have to say with a grain salt, but I have a good understanding of the school after lots of research. Here's essentially why I committed to Feirstein...

1. It's actually affordable - just over 20k for a year's tuition in film school is pretty unheard of, especially if you want to stay in NYC. Yes NYU and Columbia are more established programs, and yet there is no way I was gonna put myself in that much debt for a degree.

2. The equipment and facilities - Feirstein is unrivaled in terms of camera equipment, stages and studios, and other resources for production and post-production. The school is massive, not to mention it's located within Steiner Studios (although it should be noted they are still completely independent. This was made clear in the tour, and students should not expect to just walk onto a hot set).

3. Collaboration over competition - this program is three years, and allows students to learn all facets of filmmaking, instead of pigeon holing yourself into one area. Although you do eventually specify a concentration, this is a great opportunity (especially for directors) to learn the physical trade of filmmaking, which will then make yourself more marketable in the real world. That said, you may be a DP on one film, a producer for another, and a director for another all at the same time. Feirstein markets itself as a program made to encourage collaboration over anything else, unlike other programs where all the students are competing to be the "best", while exclusively focusing on personal projects.

I want to make one thing clear above all else - literally no one will ever care what name is at the top of your degree. As long as you're learning and making connections, you'll be set. Make friends with your peers, follow the ones who are committed and creative, and it will be a worth while investment. Those people (as well as the professors, where half are teaching at Columbia and NYU as well) will help build your foundation. It does not have the same esteemed reputation as other schools, mostly because it's a fairly new program, and yet I really believe film school is what you make it. With the resources, low cost, and opportunity to learn such a wide breadth of skills, I'm definitely looking forward to going.

This is true. Heck... Here people don't even care if you have a film school degree or not. They care if you can do the work and if you're good.

Has anyone heard of Brooklyn College MFA? I got into Brooklyn. I really want to go to Tisch and like NYC a lot, but since I got rejected and Brooklyn seems to be a lesser version of Tisch, I'm wondering if I should attend Brooklyn instead. I'm also waiting to hear back from CalArts (Film and Video MFA), Chapman (Directing), and LMU (Directing). The other school I got into is SAIC.

Good luck with your upcoming interview! I also submitted my application in January but haven't heard back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I got an interview invitation a couple of days ago! Can I ask what kind of questions were asked during the session if you'd like to share? Thanks!

I was interviewed by Rick Lopez, and it was a good experience. His questions were:

- Tell me about two experiences, one where the process and the team worked well, and the other where it did not work well together. He highlighted that it does not need to be a filmmaking experience. We spent a bit of time on this one as he wanted to know the details.
- What lessons did you take away from the experiences?
- What's the worst job you ever had?
- Tell me about an experience outside of film production where you took a leader role
- What interests you? What kind of films would you like to make? Spent a bit of time on this one too.

And then it was my turn to ask.

Good luck with your interview.

Thank you so much for sharing! Which production track do you focus more on?
