Essays

Film School students, or those who have passed the turmoil of the application process, would you mind posting your film school essays, or certain parts of it, what it was about?

It'd be very helpful for those of us currently applying and thinking of what to write.

Stop trying to take the easy way out and write your own film school essays. It's tough though. It took me 6 weeks just to do my personal statement for UCLA.

In most cases they tell you what to write about, or what the statement should focus on. I got this book on writign personal statements... though most of the statements were about Law, Medical, and Business schools, the book still helped in giving me an idea on how people write.

For the creative writing essays, they usually give you guidelines on that also.

My advice- Read short stories, comics, books, for inspiration on what to write in terms of stories and creating characters. That may help get you started.

For the personal statement ask your friends what they think of you, and do some serious self analysis on who you are. Also, while writing, just write honestly about yourself and it'll turn out fine. For 5 weeks I've been writing, trying to figure out what the amission committe wants... and ending up getting stuck. Just write it, then analyze it afterwards.

hope this helps

I definetely agree that you should read, or watch something. You know, a classic movie, or good book. It was a film that inspired me to write my NYU essay, and I think it turned out pretty good... I hope so at least.

Good luck, and I know how you feel wanting to read other essays. I do not think it is cheating, rather, it is being resourceful. Reading something doesn't mean you are going to steal an idea, but, reading something from someone who got in, and something from someone who didn't, well, they make books on this stuff. It's not cheating.

Just, don't stress so much to the point you naseate yourself (like I did), and just write something from the heart. That's all you can really do.
