How are you handling the student loans?

Hey graduates, I think a very helpful thing for those of us looking at film school would be to hear your experiences with handling the cost of your degree. Obviously film school is a significant financial investment. For instance, NYU estimates a COA of 90K per year, http://tisch.nyu.edu/content/dam/tisch/grad-film/COAGradFilmMay2016.pdf

So I'm wondering, how do you feel about the cost involved in your decision? Did you get loans to cover your education? Do you feel that the cost involved was worth it?

Are you struggling to pay back those loans or are they manageable? And how exactly are you going about paying them off? Are you using an income based repayment plan or a standard 10 year repayment plan? And what is your overall experience and thought process with how the student loans are being paid off?

Any thoughts or experiences you can share would be hugely beneficial. Thanks!

Thanks for starting this topic. I'll just add that I'd also be interested in hearing experiences/ideas/thoughts about funding student films. Many schools, NYU and USC included, only provide a meager amount of support/funding for films and it would be interesting to hear either experiences of former students or the plans/tactics of the incoming classes to tackle this monetary challenge.

@Chris W this thread has unfortunately gone unnoticed, but I think if there’s any information prospective students should see, it would be the answer to this question, especially now while people are examining their finance packages.

Do you know any graduates who would be able to talk about how finances have worked for them in the time following film school? Their input would be very much appreciated. :)

Maybe reply to and/or send conversations to students from the previous years threads to draw their attention to this thread?

I'll contact some I know.

I've posted a somewhat exhaustive reply on the Columbia 2018 Thread, which is linked below! It's Columbia specific, but certainly has some applicable information for MFAs as a whole!
