MFA + Career Path 2026

Hey everyone! I’m currently based in Mexico City, working in film/TV production with credits on projects for HBO, Netflix, and Prime Video. I’ve done AD trainee, PA, and location scouting work. I love being on set and want to keep learning and moving up—ideally into roles like 2nd AD, Key PA, or Producing.

That said, I’m also seriously considering doing an MFA or hybrid program (maybe part-time or international) to grow creatively, build a global network, and eventually AD or produce more original work.

I’m fortunate to have citizenship in Mexico, the U.S., and Spain, and I’d like to leverage this—but honestly, most of my professional network is in CDMX, where the pay is tough and growth feels limited.

My question is:
Has anyone here transitioned from crew work into an MFA program or creative leadership role? Was the MFA worth it—or did labs, fellowships, or short films open more doors?

I know the situation the film industry is in, and people are out of jobs, among other challenges.

I went from crew work to doing a short MFA-style course abroad, and it honestly opened more doors than I expected—mostly through connections and a few small labs.

The actual degree wasn’t as important as the people and projects I got involved with. While figuring all that out, I even stumbled across some useful perks like a carers discount card that made life a bit easier while juggling side gigs.
