Hi everyone!

Is anyone else planning to apply for the Fall 2026 intake of the NYU MFA in Film and Television?

I'm from Chile and would really appreciate any tips or advice from those who have gone through the process—or anyone else applying this year.

I was waitlisted after my interview last year and ultimately did not get in. I'm in the process of reapplying but I feel somewhat stuck. Should I submit the same material I submitted last year? Anyone else going through the same thing?

Hi! Hopping into the conversation. I've got half a month left and I pretty much just have my Dramatic Story done. Struggling on my Statement of Purpose. Not sure where to put my focus and how to summarize who I am and why I want to go to NYU. It's going to be a sprint to finish! Anyone else struggling to get it done?

Also sprinting to the finish here, I have most of the materials but still need to do the Video Self Portrait and still need to edit the Statement of Purpose and short scene. Not going to get much of a break during Thanksgiving Break!

How did your Statement of Purpose turn out? I had written one for a different school but decided to completely overhaul it for NYU. Having other people look it over and give their advice was super helpful for me.

Hi! Thanks for replying! I pretty much have everything done, just need to edit the crap out of my Statement of Purpose (mainly need to make it flow better) and also edit my feature film treatment. I had a few people look at it - I wish I had more examples of other SOP to get an understanding of structure. Although I also want to have a unique take to it.

Are you applying to any other schools? I’m mainly applying to NYC based schools, NYU, BROOKLYN COLLEGE, and STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY. Thinking I should maybe apply to some other schools.

Haha I guess I’m the opposite, NYU is the only school I’m applying to outside California. I’m also applying to UCLA, USC, AFI, and CalArts. New York would be a big move for me and NYU is basically the only program I’d move out of LA for.

I’m doing basically the same format as you, title, genre, logline, but I also added a description of the setting, wrote out a bit of the opening scene, and descriptions of each of the characters. Less of a summary for mine, but I think that’s just cause it’s more character-driven instead of plot-driven. I actually feel like my treatment is the strongest part of my application, so I hope it makes up for other parts where it kinda lacks lol.

How do you like it in New York? Always been curious about making but the move but worried that it would be a stressful place to live compared to LA.

Just submitted my application! Can’t believe I finished it and feel pretty good about my materials

Well, I left NYC in 2016 because I got so burnt out and then moved to LA and fell in love. New York is not an easy place to live BUT I do feel more inspired and motivated to hustle for myself and I’ve had an easier time tapping into a creative community that is welcoming and focused on artistic intention. Long term though, LA is definitely better all around just for your general well being. I just needed a change.

Yea I'd love to exchange portfolio materials! I won't link my short film publicly, since I am planning to submit it to festivals early next year, but I'll shoot you a DM.

Also, just watched your short film, it's gorgeous! Loved the use of sci-fi to explore personal themes, reminds me a lot of Mysterious Skin.

People are active in other threads but you're right let's get this NYU thread active again.

Honestly I think the new Google AI answers is making it harder for people to find the site when using Google.

But posting and being active on the forums is a great way to boost visibility and bring others in. So please keep that up and reply to as many threads as you can and log all of your applications.

I've gotten four views each on my visual submissions (the video self portrait and the short film) back in December (which I think was just them checking if all the applications are complete because the watch duration was like 30 seconds haha) and I've finally gotten one more views for both my visual submissions this Monday! This time it seems like they've watched the whole thing. Although some have said that the viewer stats are unreliable it's just good to know that they're actually going through every submissions ;D Fingers crossed!
