NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing 2024 - Who's applying?

Has anyone had their interview yet? What’s the ~vibe~ ? Mine will be this Friday.
I just had mine. It was a lovely conversation mostly centered on what makes NYU different from other programs and the practical side of things-- relocating to NYC, the cost, time commitment. How that fit with my life. I asked several questions too. Just 25 min. I have a feeling the decision is based on our writing sample and this is kind just making sure the program fits what you want. Let me know if you have any more questions!! Good luck. I'm sure it'll go great!

Thanks for sharing! This is really helpful. Not what I'd expect based on my other interviews but tbh, that seems like the best way to do it. You don't want to accept people that don't seem like they'd actually like living in New York, if it's too expensive, etc. And if you felt that way you probably wouldn't want to go there either!

Just wondering... anyone else who interviewed with the Playwriting Faculty: do they talk with you about your writing sample? And does it seem like the interview signifies a good chance of your acceptance?

I submitted a play. I was interviewed by Professor Fox-- he was so nice and gave good advice. He had actually read my writing sample. He asked what the genesis of my play was and we only talked about the play briefly though. Hope this helps!!

I'd love to live in NYC itself obviously but I'm not sure it's possible yet for me. Is anyone thinking of commuting into NYC or do you know if current students commute? Ex. From southern CT or NJ?

I actually have two young children and am based in CT. If lucky enough to get in, I really want to somehow make it work. Thanks!!

Hi, thanks for the recent reply btw!

Personally, I commute from the city for my current job, and to be quite honest, it can be very tiring! In terms of affordability, commuting is wayyy cheaper. It’s also a good time to get some reading in, or even writing if you thrive in that kind of environment.

That being said, I’m not sure if current students commute. I’m sure that some don’t live directly in Manhattan due to the housing market right now! Hopefully things start to get better soon.

Thanks for sharing! Yes I imagine it would get so tiring to commute in. I wouldn't even consider it except for knowing how challenging it will be to find a good place for the kids to live in the city, as you said with the housing market. Let's see what happens! Did you have your interview yet? Fingers crossed for you!

I don't think my interview went well tbh ): Did anyone else have their interviewer critique their screenplay? Mine told me that certain parts didn't make sense & I think I got a bit defensive. Really sad bc NYU is my first choice but I think I messed up pretty badly.
My interviewer mentioned she didn't read my script but told me a critique from a reader. I understood where the reader was coming from, so I agreed. Generally, I find it more effective to digest feedback than to argue. You don't have to make changes if you disagree with someone's feedback.

Yep they gave me feedback too -- I was surprised when he started giving critiques because I've never had something like that happen in an interview before lol. I wouldn't worry too much though! I think they mainly do that to give us a feel for what it would be like to be in workshop settings. I'm sure people get caught off-guard by the feedback all the time. Like someone was saying before the real deciding factor is an applicant's writing itself so try not to put too much pressure on yourself <3 nobody is their absolute best in circumstances like that.

I agree with the comment not to be too hard on yourself. In NYU's info session, they said writing sample is what's most important. I think everyone is understanding that as writers we can all get defensive sometimes. I've made mistakes in job interviews before and as hard as it is now I try to see those as learning experiences for the next. Fingers crossed for you!
