NYU Tisch Graduate Film 2024 - Who's applying?

So basically I just felt that the vibe was off and there wasn't much rapport (with the exception of one interviewer who was really lovely).

They asked me several questions and some were ok, but some really weren't and I felt like I was talking to a brick wall. They asked me what I could do differently in my film and I was trying to say because we didn't have any film equipment, I was using natural lighting only and I could've scheduled my film better so that there wasn't one scene that was shot at golden hour when it's meant to take place on one story day - but one interviewer cut me off and was like 'I'm not talking about equipment, I'm talking about story', so I never go the chance to explain what I meant. She also didn't specify she was asking about story only, either.

Later on, I was asked to describe what I saw outside my window and I gave a description of the buildings (that all the houses look the same, people hang flags up outside, you can tell there's a sense of community) and I was cut off by another interviewer who said: 'No, that's not what I meant. That's tone. You're a filmmaker now, so describe what you actually see. What are the houses made from?' I guess it was my fault for not realising the question was so literal, but the way in which I was cut off was very abrasive and belittling.

Overall it felt really disappointing and not at all like the interview I had last year. No one asked me about funding for NYU that I'd been asked last year either, and in general the awkward pauses really stressed me out. To me, it felt like I was being interviewed out of an obligation rather than actually wanting to interview me.

But yeah, it really didn't feel like the one I had last year and I'm not positive about it at all, which is a real shame!
Ugh that’s unfortunate. Fingers crossed! They might be tired tbh….given they’ve been at it for weeks at this point but no excuse.

Im wondering if Julia cut you off ? Asking because she cut me off a few times and it was a little jarring but still seemed friendly…wondering if that’s just her way.

I don't know if this was because I applied last year and had to withdraw due to some pretty serious health reasons... but Julia didn't interview me. I was interviewed by Barbara Schock, Gail Segal, and Jen Ruff (who was so incredibly lovely). Gail and Barbara are former chairs of the department, but I haven't yet met anyone who wasn't interviewed by Julia.

However, I know exactly what you mean! Last year Julia cut me off when I was asked to tell a story from my childhood and she thought I was about to tell the same story that was in my personal statement - she jumped in and said 'if this is the same story as in your personal statement - ' but I interjected and said 'no it's not' and I carried on. She was really friendly and lovely and every other time I've spoken to her it's been wonderful so I think it was her just jumping in to try and get more out of me creatively if it was the same story. It was awkward as heck though and I felt so embarrassed last year that I felt like I hadn't gotten in from that alone, but it was all ok in the end! So I wouldn't necessarily worry about that happening to you :)

I was cut off a few times, but I was glad they did because usually it was to help me understand the question or give them the answer they wanted. It felt like I was being tested on how I tell a story as well as how to incorporate notes which I think is a huge part of the development process in our discipline. Of course I think I could have done better but overall I feel pretty good about it! Good luck to everyone!

Have any non-US residents gotten interviews yet?
I’m international! I was invited to interview on the 5th February and had my interview a few days ago ☺️

which day on the calendar was the last scheduled interview option? just curious / can't remember -- maybe today?
I think you're right, it was today or yesterday (remembered because of the leap year!). Last year we had interviews around this time and I heard back mid-March (interview requests were sent out a bit earlier this year though) so there's a chance we'll hear back in the next 2-3 weeks!

I agree! I think it’ll be next week 👀

I had wondered if they’ll come out a bit earlier because interview requests came out a week early but I guess not!

Excited to find out with y’all ☺️

yayyy!!! me too -- wasn't it the first weekend of their spring break in past years? guessing that would make sense with this week being midterms and all that -- eeek so close y'all!! sending good vibes

It looks like the dramatic writing MFA applicants have heard today! Last year I applied to both MFAs and I think I heard back from Grad Film first but on the same day. Guessing we could hear tomorrow maybe?

Also seems like they usual call for acceptances with grad film? versus the writing people got it via portal?
and I thought I read on some past year that they call in the evening...? not in the middle of the day?
so possible for it to still happen tonight even ...
