Please Help . Advice for Fall 2010 Submission

Hey guys,

I was wondering if any of you guys, could provide me with some insight and advice. I've been out of school for a little over two years and have recently decided to re apply to several film schools for the Fall of 2010. I've already finished my resume, collected transcript, and put together a few scholarly and non scholarly examples of my writing but still seem a little unsure of what I should submit when it comes to creative works. I do have several film from my undergraduates studies but feel I have changed a lot as an artist. Do you think I would be better off submitting other creative works? Since I've graduated from college I've built a collection of photographic stills.

Thanks again,
SilverLenz

Thanks for the comment Suzako, but I'm a bit confused by your GRE comment. I never said I was avoiding the GRE. I've already taken it.

my bad, silverlenz, I combined your question with someone else's in my head. This is what happens when you do these message boards at work and step away for a second.

To address Your question: I think you are better off submitting your most recent work. It represents who you are now. Some schools ask for a range of materials so you could very well combine your samples. I'm a little confused by your mention of scholarly writing. Most program do not ask for academic papers, but rather creative materials.

Well several of the schools wanted writing samples such as research papers, poetry, or other reports. I guess they want to get an idea of how well we can write since theory classes are also required in most mfa programs. I've also decided to submit a voice over script that I put together for my job. It was a web based I for my job. Do you think it would be a good idea to also submit a co writen script?

Submit what you think is good. It's simple but it's true. It sort of sounds like you might not think that your older samples are your best work. You don't need to submit something that currently represents your craft...you just need to submit something that will impress others.

Farhanali,

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually thinking about applying to Northwestern University. Are things still getting better @ Northwestern? I read your post about the problems you experienced due to it being a new program. Does Northwestern favor those with degrees in writing, english, or creative writing? I have a lot of ideas and a couple of creative pieces ( shorts) but don't know if I'd have a good shot of getting in based on that. What are the backgrounds of your fellow classmates?

Thanks in advance,
SilverLenz
