UT Austin Screenwriting 2024

IMG_2862.webpIMG_2843.webp Here are a couple of pictures from my "Denied" party LOL! The lemon cake was amazing - we had it polished it off by the next day. :)

@JakeTay I also got my rejection email, today. Sending you a virtual "toast" in solidarity.

I printed the email out. I expect it to be the first of many more rejections, but that is major fucking progress over my norm: thinking about an MFA and never applying; half-finishing a writing project and never submitting it to anyone. I hope to wallpaper my office in rejections.

The waitlist means that life still goes on, basically. We are the backup soldiers. 🪖 The reserves, if you will. The school needs 7 peeps, so if someone doesn't take up the offer to study at UT, one of the waitlisters is granted admission. So, our final decision has been pushed back to mid to late-April.

There could be up to 11 people on the waitlist. Not many people decide not to go to the program. Soooo, it's something like a soft rejection for all but the lucky few.
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you and @czu and any other candidates here who were waitlisted. :) I think I would be very restless having to wait longer for the final decision, but I hope y'all feel victorious in what you accomplished, nonetheless. Your work was exceptional. It stood out in a crowded field of almost 100 applicants.

According to On Writing, Stephen King had a nail with a ton of rejection letters for a long time.
I love that!!! I think that's what I'll do. It would be very satisfying to have a whole pile of them hanging together! I should nail it next to my bachelor's degree in English. 🤣 Almost 16 years later, and at least that education is finally getting some use. That would be a very happy visual reminder.

It sounds like a lot of you have some schools you're still waiting to hear from. And NYU omg!!! I would bust out Sinatra's "Theme From New York, New York," and absolutely die of happiness. Sending good vibes as everyone waits on the news.

@RandomLurker you'd asked if anyone was planning on applying again.

I had decided not to. Undiagnosed ADHD didn't leave me with the greatest GPA and after being out of school for so long and working remotely in private practice, I don't have a whole heck of a lot of people who can be references for me. This last factor was the reason I only applied to one program, instead of, say, RTF and Michener.

Except, today I have some villain energy going on. I saw that rejection email and got energized by it. I spent the afternoon/evening giddy and doing a lot of internal cackling. Possibly, I'll "Be Back." ;)

Yesss! We're building our success stories! I personally popped a bottle of champagne with my roommate after hitting submit on this application. This was a big deal to me!

LMAO YES! I've been doing a lot of external cackling too. You've got another villain on your side.

ADHD mentioned 👁️

Sadly I just received my rejection letter via email, but it was nice to finally hear back. So happy for all the people that got in, you’re going to have a great time in the program!!!
Same here! Just received my rejection. Congrats to all the amazing applicants in this thread. Hope to see you alongside me in some writer's room in the near future. Still awaiting some other decisions.

Bummer! Don't give up. It sometimes takes a while.

Be sure to log your application when you can. :) it really is a huge help to people in the next year.

Rose, I would say you have something magical. Incredible optimism that is engaging and as a reader I am always interested in your posts. I think you have some creative energy that’s worthwhile for sharing UT or not. I hope that spark finds its rightful place.
@Interested Party you just made my week! 🥹 Thank you so much for those very kind words.! That really hit me, like a bullseye right to my heart. ❤️

I don't know if you're into enneagram? I'm a 4w5 and I've always struggled with feeling like I don't know quite who I am, and that I don't really belong anywhere. But I had a moment a couple years ago during a writing class I was taking, when I realized, 'I'm an artist. And I fit here.' I think I truly understood myself for the first time, and since then, it's been a matter of trying to get better at writing, and exactly what you said, find the right place, wherever that may be. I do hope I find that.

I hope you find yours, too. And this admission cycle, preferably, right? ;) Let us know what happens! ☺️
