Waive the right to access recommendation letters or not?

hi friend,

When I logged in to the LMU application system looking at the recommendation section, I was wondering should we choose to waive the right to view the recommendation letters? I am confused why do they make us to choose, what's the difference?

Under the 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the applicant will have access to this information unless they have waived that right.

I waive my right to access this report.
I do not waive my right to access this report.

If you don't waive it, your recommenders will know you can read their recommendation letters after they submit it, which means the letters are not going to be as real and honest as it may cause unnecessary argument for what it's written.

btw do you happen to know what if the email address my recommender gave me was a gmail address instead of the corporate email? I am bit concerned will this mark down my application, because the studio I worked for does not have corporate email system.

You’re welcome! I don’t know if it will mark you down or not, but I think the schools are possible to get in touch with your recommenders to confirm them. But it won’t have this issue if the applicant could provide an official email.

I understand sometimes corporations don’t have their email system, but I think it’s better to check with the schools you’re going for, and leave them a note for record or something.
