USC MFA Fall 2014 (film & tv)

I'm just about to finish my MFA at USC and I remember how obsessed I was with this forum when I was applying. Thought I would revisit and see if I could help at all.... I can't speak for the others but GPA is definitely important at USC. You will be in class with Ivy Leaguers, UCLA/Berkeley...

What's a good way to learn filmmaking for a newbie?

I did a summer directing workshop at Columbia that was fantastic. It's about the same price as USC. But you walk away with two really great films that you own.

    What school to choose?

You MUST go with AFI. Tisch Asia should be your second choice, but AFI will have you working with the best writers and directors, which should be your most important consideration as a aspiring producer. NYFA and Academy of Art are NOT respected in the industry. They are a waste of your money.

    Got into LMU NEED HELP!

Chub, From someone who's switched from a top-tier econ program to film, here's my advice. It sounds like you have a good job. And I deduce, from the missed deadlines, that it may have been I hasty decision (same with me, the first time around). From your qualifications, it sounds like stark...

    Columbia Fall 2010

Thanks, jojo. Yeah with USC, people were accepted by different means at different times, so maybe that is the case.

    USC SCA Admitted Student's Day!

haha early birds. I don't wanna get up that early to drive from west LA. I toured in the Fall, and saw Pete Carrol and the football team practicing in front of the library...It was pretty awesome. oh and i guess their brand new production facilities are sort of ok.

    Columbia Fall 2010

Hey guys, My roommate, who replied to columbia but wasn't interviewed, received his rejection letter over the weekend. I was interviewed and have not heard anything either way. Has anyone that was interviewed for directing rejected/accepted by mail yet?

    Columbia Fall 2010

Hey y'all, I interviewed for Directing on Saturday March 20th, no call yet. I actually thought it was one of my better interviews...Anybody in NYC/East Coast receive anything in the mail?

    Columbia Fall 2010

It seems like only a few people got calls. It may be that Eric only called people who specifically asked when the decisions would be coming out, or who had an unusually awesome interview. Another option is that admissions files were divided among faculty to notify by phone at their discretion...

    USC Fall 2010

Hey, for those who are lucky enough to be deciding between different types of schools (USC vs. Columbia/UCLA, for example), here's a pretty good article from UCLA's website: http://www.tft.ucla.edu/news/a...ement/302-backstage/

    USC Fall 2010

omlette, you were accepted, not waitlisted, correct? A waitlisted friend of mine has yet to receive his forms in the mail (and he lives in LA).

    USC - Where to Live

Yes there is grad student housing. There's some info in the Grad Admissions (not SCA) packet (p.11). Also: http://housing.usc.edu/Housing.../BuildingSearch.aspx And: http://housing.usc.edu/forms/0...ving%20UND%20GRD.pdf

    USC SCA Admitted Student's Day!

Silver Lake is a cool neighborhood, very arty. Rents can be high (it's gotten a lot of buzz among hipsters in recent years) so its good you can share with someone. Not too far from campus (20-30 min with traffic, welcome to LA) Here's a fun tool...

How great is FSU as a film school?

My understanding is that FSU is a Top 10-15 program. I would also look into USC and COlumbia. Those programs are expensive, but it is possible to get a lot of support after your first semester or year. However, no program will help you if you only want to work "moderately hard." You have to put...
