Jayimess--
Yay! Glad you've made your final decision! :)
For your housing search: If you don't mind commuting a bit and you want a slightly more "suburban" feel, I would personally recommend looking in some of the cities on the south side of the Valley, or slightly to the east. Specifically...
Jayimess -- Totally agree that the production education/opportunities are a big plus. My friends at USC right now (in the Production and Producing programs) say that the 507 production class that everyone takes first semester is a blast. You get to know people across all the different divisions...
Jayimess - Congratulations on getting into USC! I've been away from the forums for awhile (crazy busy!), and this is an exciting development!
RE: money situation at SC... It's true that they pretty much don't give fellowships, etc. to incoming grad students. We all have to apply after at least...
Lily-- It's not that surprising that you feel a little "in-the-dark" about UCLA; I just have the perspective of being a "native". My husband works for one of the major studios and many of our friends are working writers/actors/directors/production staff, and several have gone to each of the...
Lily -- congrats!
RE: East vs. West, I think you have to go with your heart. But as an example, I've done quite well as a theater artist in LA (playwright and actress). But it's almost impossible to make a living at it here. For that, I would realistically have to go to New York (which I'm not...
Regarding housing for transplants:
AFI: Closest to Hollywood and Los Feliz. Highly recommend Los Feliz. Young, hip crowd, cute neighborhood but with impossible parking. Also try Larchmont Village/Hancock Park (where I live -- right by Paramount Studio) for nice/slightly pricier housing...
Hey JL - congrats!
I got into USC and UCLA for screenwriting. I was planning to apply to AFI, but changed my mind after attending an admissions event there (had concerns similar to the ones that Lily raised about writers being kept very separate from the rest of the department, among other...
sa - I applied to screenwriting. It seems like production/directing candidates haven't been notified yet.
Jayimess - Well, you obviously don't need my spot at USC, but someone's gonna get my spot at UCLA! ;)
I'm guessing "informal" notification means they just want us to email them back with...
Jayimess--Definitely let me know when you're coming out to LA! Love to get together.
RE: How I found your film... I've been trying to search for other people online who got into USC for Screenwriting so I could try to get in contact with some of my future classmates over the summer (not much...
Hey winterreverie,
At least in my case, the grad decision page still says that no decision has been made. In the acceptance email, it said that a hard copy letter would follow in the mail, and to expect an "official" notification within a few weeks.
They requested a decision by May 4th and...
Congrats, Jayimess!!!
I just got my email from them too. :)
By the way, I accidentally came across your film on the On The Lot site when I was Googling something. BEAUTIFUL.
Hi room904-- It seems that with MFA programs, your creative samples carry a lot of relative weight and might make up for a low GPA.
That said, I think grades do matter to a point because the grad programs at the top tier schools are INCREDIBLY rigorous. I have friends currently at USC and...
I only applied to USC and UCLA. I was planning to apply to AFI, but changed my mind after attending an admissions event there. I'm sure it's a wonderful school, but my gut feeling was that it wasn't the right fit for me. I have friends at USC now (in production and the Stark program) and they...
Hi, I originally posted this in a thread I started about getting into USC (in my excitement, I forgot about this thread at the time)...
Just wanted to let you all know that my USC letter was postmarked on the 3rd (Tuesday). I'm in L.A., so I imagine more people will get their notifications by...
