In terms of equipment Columbia doesn't have best best out there, however their professors are some of the best. I have a friend who is a film major there and he is networking like crazy do to the fact the professors have been in the industry.
the first two years are designed to get your core accedemic classes out of the way so you can focus on your film degree the remaining years. Where did you see the student's work? The films i've seen have been awesome.

There's so much to say, sound stages, awesome editing equipment,not to mention kick arse 35mm cameras. Plus the people there are very helpful and will answer any questions you have.
