The process is interesting. Except for the usual materials like portfolio and personal statement, Chapman also requires a video showcasing your personal life. It's pretty unique to me, at least in all the other schools I applied I didn't see such thing.
I got the zoom email and have video chat with Eric. He told me that I was accepted and they gave me 25k scolarship.
This was my second time apply and I was admitted last time. I didn't enter, instead, being an prodect manager for 3 years. Then I can't stand the life without creating, so I came back.
Application was pretty straightforward except for making a new short film. Worse and directed that by end of November, and submitted it with a different short I made a few years back. Interviewed over zoom and thought it went well.
Nothing complicated. The intent word limit was short, so I struggled to distill my 3 page intent into 400 words.
They did want a film with sync sound and dialogues. My film has sync sound but no dialogue, so I had to use a chopped scene with dialogue into the narrative to meet that requirement.
applied end of October, interviewed end of Feb, just got my official acceptance! Any current students that are willing to share their experiences I would love to talk.
Overall, it has been great. UCLA's application is difficult because it has so few components and doesn't include a short film sample. I thought what I submitted was strong, but have not heard back from them yet so it may not have been what they are looking for. We shall see!
Update: turns out...
Overall it has been good. Chapman's application is fun with lots of interesting creative challenges. It helped that I applied last year and had about 9 months (after the rejection) to plot my comeback.
One of the nice things about LMU's application is that, if you are applying to other schools as well, you can repurpose many of the components for other applications. Overall, it was fun.
I love AFI's application. It's deceptively simple, but it forces you to be creative in both how you write your essay and in the film(s) you make. Overall, this process went well for me. It helped that I applied the year before, so I had 9 months (after getting the rejection the first time...
I love applying to these programs because it makes me do interesting work and thought experiments. USC's application is a challenge because you have to convey a lot of information, meaning, and emotions in a short amount of time (short essay, short scene, and short film). But it was a fun challenge!
