SBU TV Writing MFA info session (May 4th)

Hey Film School community, I'm a grad student in the TV Writing MFA at Stony Brook and absolutely love it here! A lot of people have been reaching out to me with questions after I made a post about my experience, and I just wanted to encourage anyone who's interested in learning more about the...

Attending (Admitted After Interview) STONY BROOK MFA in Television Writing FALL 2026

The process has been very engaging. It required a well-rounded portfolio consisting of a writing sample, a 10-page script, and a video pitch. Along with the statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation.

Denied (w/o Interview) Columbia Directing and Screenwriting MFA

Once I realized I did not get interviewed my expectations fell significantly. However it did take an absurd amount of time to get a response back from them.

Admitted (After Interview) DEPAUL UNIVERSITY - MFA FILM

The application process was smooth. The portfolio wasn't too big, but I still felt like I could showcase my work. My interviewer followed up after I was admitted and wrote a very nice email.

    Interview Scheduled UCLA Producers Program

Easy application process, but a long waiting time. Not much else to go on until after the interview. iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

    Denied (w/o Interview) Columbia - Directing/Screenwriting MFA -2026

My application went well, Columbia allows a lot of freedom with the application as they want to her the individual writer's voice. I also created a resume of all my previous film work as an SFX artist and in other positions I have done in the past.

    Applied Northwestern Screenwriting MFA 2026

This application process was definitely the most intense of the schools I've applied to simply because of the writing sample. Other than that it was very easy to understand and fairly simple; it just took me a while to get this application done.

Applied MFA SCREENWRITING - UT AUSTIN

The process was relatively easy. As it was for the Production program last year, it was just going down the required list. The only hiccup was the transcript. For some reason or another, they used the same one submitted last year. But it didn’t have all the updated information. Other than that...

Interviewed AFI Screenwriting - Fall 2026

It has been pretty smooth. The application did not require as much material as I expected, and that allowed me to be picky with the work that I am submitting. As an International student I had to also submit an English Proficiency test. The platform was very nicely built and everything was clear.

Hi everyone! I didn't see a thread for this year so I thought I'd start it. Anyone hear from Stanford or Northwestern yet? Seems like by this time last year they were scheduling interviews...
