This one was tough. Had a hard time fitting everything into the word count so I'm not sure I was able to fully realize some scripts. Also had a tough time with the self tape video haha.
Smooth; this was my first time applying for the program.
I did not receive an interview notification.
I am open to answering questions about the process and insights from friends who interviewed and were accepted.

Really loved the application process! There were parts that were challenging, but I felt that it made me dig a little deeper into discovering what I want to make in the future.
First time applying, the application process was pretty straightforward. Submitted a full-length screenplay (118 pages), resume, a personal statement i wasn't all that confident in, and 3 letters of rec.
The application was definitely arduous but not terrible overall. To be honest I decided to apply around 1pm on the day it was due, and I submitted my application about 10 minutes before the deadline. Would not recommend taking this route lol. I asked for recommendation letters that day, and they...
The application was long and arduous! I worked on my essay 5 months lol.
This year we were requires to submit a 1-2 min video telling the school something about ourselves that they wouldn't get from our personal statement. This felt really tough--tougher than the writing.
Honestly, the dual degree application is the longest thing I’ve ever seen and it really tests our passion and dedication. I really enjoyed it and I think everything they ask for allows us to fully express our ideas.
Only submitting one writing sample was intimidating but made the app process easier. Didn’t feel particularly great about my personal statement, but hoping the sample makes up for it.
Application portal was a little confusing given I had to check boxes every few questions confirming I am applying to the right program. Lots of questions, but you can get through it in a week. Have to double check you selected the right boxes for each question given how many there were.
For the visual submission on the graduate film portfolio, you can choose between submitting either 10 photos or 1 video. Have any of you gotten in by submitting 10 photos?
I feel like I rather submit some photos I've taken, but I am worried that I will be less competitive with someone who...
I'm applying for some MFA film programs and I'm currently working on my Feature Film Treatment for Columbia and NYU. I've got a longer treatment (nearly 20 pages) but I'm struggling with getting it into one page, double spaced, 12pt Courier font.
The Columbia prompt reads:
Feature film...
I submitted my portfolio with a screenplay, stage play, and a short story. I had never written scripts beforehand. I wrote my short story very last minute.
I was curious if anyone has insight on the tendency for Columbia to offer scholarships for graduate MFA directing / screenwriting students? I've read that NYU typically offers at most around 25,000 per student per year, but I was curious how Columbia compares to this. Thank you kindly in advance!
Great! Straightforward. I have spent a decent amount of time in the industry and on set. I think I probably could have a successful career if I moved to LA, but as of now work is slow in NYC and I figured that NYU would give me the boost I need for more consistent work. Besides that, I want to...
April 15 is coming up and I still have a decision to make! I am very grateful to have been accepted into MFA programs at both NYU (Dramatic Writing) and Columbia (Film - Writing for Film and TV Concentration). I am most interested in TV writing, but excited to learn other formats as well.
I am...
Application was fun and interesting! This was unique in that the writing samples were both prompted. They had us write a dramatic story in PROSE, something I had never done before. It was an interesting exercise. I then adapted that prose story into a short script that I used for my Columbia app.
Process was good. I loved the interviewers. The department chair called me in the afternoon to let me know I had gotten in and then my letter and fin aid was available the following day
The application process was easy. I don't feel like they ask for too much. They really just want to see your writing stand on its own. I feel like it was straightforward. They are really looking for unique voices, so try and lean into that.
