Tisch Asia vs. Tisch New York?

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and look forward to sharing thoughts and concerns with you all as we go through the application process together.

My question is if anyone has any advice on Tisch Asia vs. Tisch New York. I am debating still on which to send my application to and I have personally always been intrigued by the Asian culture and people. Is it easier to get in there vs. New York? Are their any testimonials from students who have begun classes there this semester?

hey! I'm one of the class representatives in Tisch Asia. Both NY and Singapore have their own merits I've learnt not to compare them.

some of the Tisch Asia pioneering Specials:

1) S.E. Asia is our playground - our films are aesthetically and visually amazing just given the location
2) only 33 students to all the facility/faculty/equipment - ooh the personal attention
3) 33 VERY HOT and TALENTED STUDENTS
4) We have black cobras at school
5) one too many parties and media attention
6) We are waterproof - we've learnt to shoot in the monsoon and in jungles

There will be blood, sweat (ALOT of sweat) and tears

Hey, I'm the other class rep and I whole-heartedly agree with point # 3, especially the HOT part!

Seriously though, it really depends on where you want to be in my opinion. The programs are as identical as possible, meaning that the courses, schedules, and education are identical, just some minor details are adjusted that are specific to the location.

Such as, the first project you do in the first year is a 4 minute b&w silent film on super 16. Except in Singapore, there are no film labs that process 16mm b&w film. So we shot ours on color neg and then desaturate them to b&w in post. No biggie, plus we get the option to have our films in color outside of school if we choose.

The big thing is whether you want to live and work in south east asia for 3 to 5 years. I mean, NYC has its own amazing appeal and there are days that go by where sometimes I think about how it would be if I was living and making films in that famous metropolis.

But then there are days like on a shoot we recently wrapped for a crew-mate, he shot a film about two primordial men hunting a beast in the jungle. The location was f-ing prehistoric! You just can't do that in NY.

Singapore was chosen because English is spoken everywhere and the country is extremely westernized and modern. But it's so close to so many other countries in the region, it really is a hub. Many students will travel all around south east asia to do their winter break documentary projects.

And there is the fact that our facilities and equipment are all brand new. We've got goodies that the NY campus does't have

Next year will mark the opening of Tisch's first animation department, and it's not going to be in NY, only Singapore for now. We'll have the opportunity to collaborate with them in our later years.

Personally, I feel that there are two major drawbacks to the Singapore campus:
- lack of faculty. Of course, the faculty in Singapore is great, but it pales in comparison to the New York faculty in quality and size.
- lack of other students. One of the great things about Tisch is the ability to learn from and alongside upper year students. These same people are another source of opinions when screening cuts and working out scripts.

All of these wrinkles will be worked out in a couple of years though.
