I am curious about people's advice for selecting good recommenders. I got into screenwriting after college and don't have a great academic reference who could talk about me in a writing context that well. For people from non-traditional backgrounds, how did you choose your recommenders? Any advice? Thank you!

What is the experience like? I am considering applying in the future and would love to hear about students' experiences. How much time does school require from you? Is it possible to balance a career in the industry while taking the three year program i.e. Writing & Producing M.F.A.?

I'm guessing it's gonna be a while, but I've never applied for rolling admission anything before. What's the usual rollout of acceptances/rejections, would you say? Also, can anyone tell me past enrollment numbers for this program? I couldn't find anything on Emerson's website. Thanks!
Why can’t I see any Art center students here…? I’d like to get some information about the film MFA program of Art center 😢

Hi!The interview was good! They were rly nice and only asked me why do I want to go to Duke. And then just asked me to ask them questions. And they gave me 12200 dollars for the second and third semester TA job and 10000 per year scholarship. But I might still want to go Calarts. I'm still thinking about that.

Hi, did you attend the interview? May I know if you're applying to undergraduate or master programs?

I'd like to know your background as well if possible. I didn't take a film major during my undergraduate studies. I'm interested in applying to SAIC master programs. Thanks.
Hello all! I had my interview for the AFI directing program last week. I was notified on January 17th and the interview was conducted on the 25th. To prepare, I met with a directing fellow the weekend before to get a sense of what I would be asked, and she framed it as a "chill conversation". I can't say that was my experience (lol) so if you have any questions regarding any part of the interview process, please send them my way.

Curious if anyone who got an AFI interview also got interview requests from USC and UCLA. So far I've only been interviewed by AFI, but it's my top school so I'm happy :)
So one of the cons for this school was the internships. Do they offer good internships or anything related in NY or CA?
Looking for a review of UC Berkeley's film program from upper level students to recent graduates (2019+). Are most film studies majors, double majors? As a UC Berkeley film studies ONLY major - now that you have been in the program would you considering transferring to a more "established" film school such as USC, UCLA, NYU, Chapman, etc?

Howdy! I am almost finished with UC Berkeley's Film & Media program. This was previously the film major, but was rebranded a short while ago.
UCB prides itself on being the only academic institution that offers film study as its primary area of focus. The program does have a few production classes, but spaces are limited and they are very difficult to get into.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this when I was just starting out, but I definitely do not regret any of my time spent at UCB. My film theory classes at UCB have reshaped how I consume and produce media, and many others aspects of my life as well.

All in all, I think this was a pretty unique opportunity to really dive deeply into film in a way that other programs may not be able to provide while they focus on production.

I do look forward to production opportunities in the future! I'm excited to take everything I've learned about films and filmmaking and put it into practice!

I was a Film and Sociology double major. I'd definitely suggest double-majoring if you can. It gets tricky if you try to add on an impacted major as your second major but it's doable, you just may have to apply while you're at Berkeley to get into that major because a lot of those high-demand programs like Business are pretty impacted. Thankfully you can definitely do it, you just need a plan for it and need to start planning early on. If you only do Film you may get a little bored and I think you'll actually get way more out of your time in the program if you double major.

Has anyone applied / started their application for this year? I am trying to find the section of the application in the portal where I submit my recommenders but don't see anything. I feel like I might just be missing it... Does anyone know which section it's in? Thanks!
Does anyone know if it's alright to use a copyright music in the film portfolio? I searched everywhere on the website and couldn't find any specifics on it. I gave credits towards the artists at the end of my short film, but I'm still worried.

Got this response when I asked them:

"Hi Chris,
It’s okay, but our preference is that all music be cleared.

Not sure. But I'd ask this question in this forum here:

What is the difference between the two-year MFA in Film and Television Producing and the three-year MFA in Film Production?

If you apply for the three-year film production program, you must choose one of four areas of study (directing, cinematography, editing, or sound design). The two-year Producing program goes through how to produce film and television projects by emphasizing both the creative and business elements that it entails. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know if LFS still intends to move to a new location, and if so, when?
Hi! I have been accepted into the 2022 class, but I am unsure of attending. I wanted to defer to the winter session, but was denied. I'm currently writing, directing, and producing my first feature film and would have to put that on hold if I attended. (Which would be disappointing as I am already casting and on track to film this summer.) Looking back, would you attend the HRFS again? Do you feel like you are using the skills that you learned there? Are you currently making films?

Thank you very much for your help. There's very little information about alumni from HRFS, (now called SCFS).
Would anyone be willing to upload their application materials? Trying to figure out what a successful application has looked like

Hi!

I am attending Tisch for grad film this fall. This is a stupid question but I have two dogs—how much time will I have to go back (I live less than a mile from campus) to take care of them?

Totally valid question (says the girl who has a dog next to her right now). If you have back to back classes, you might be at NYU for up to 6 hours at a time. But if you space out your schedule more openly, you'll have breaks. Highly reccomend citi bike to make things faster too if you feel comfortable biking.

What neighborhood are you staying in? I graduated from the program and one of my classmates had a dog. She lived in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. You spend a lot of time at school (pretty much all day). Getting to Brooklyn usually takes about an hour and people don't usually go home and go back. You could set up your schedule though where you have large gaps in the day. I don't think having pets are undoable but sometimes when we were hanging out after class my classmate would be like, 'I got to walk my dog'. It's kind of a bummer when you're bonding with new friends.
