I put a lot of effort into my Statement of Purpose but struggled getting all my ideas into three pages. I do think my intro video was creative and personal and I'm proud of my 2 page scene and 2 page narrative. I had fun with it and I think it reflects my voice.
I think my application is strong, one thing that is not strong maybe my personal introduction video. first time apply, did not go to film school for undergrad. but lives in LA and made a side short with professional AFI graduates. I think the work is pretty strong. I am hoping to get a interview.
I spent about 6 weeks on the application. Feeling pretty nervous about if I'll hear back, but I'm proud of what I accomplished! If I have any regrets it's that I wasn't able to submit any video except for one piece that I had written, but I did pleasantly surprise myself with what I wrote.
I originally wasn’t going to apply to Columbia but someone told me wonderful things about the screenwriting program and I decided last minute to put together the written materials. What’s interesting is that I only submitted a 2 page scene that I wrote for my NYU application as my 10 page...
waiting for the interview. I heard NYU just started sending interview. I submitted all the materials and keep updating my English score. Feel little anxious but I plan to move on until they send me the interview.
Good! Very straight forward. They are clear about what they're asking for throughout the entire process. The film was a really fun thought exercise. No opportunity to show your portfolio or other work.
I got my interview invite on Feb 3! nervous but so excited! I am honestly not sure what else to include here its my first time applying to the mfa program and im very excited. I have a STEM background if that is relevant at all.
I had begun the application process nearly a year ago, planning and familiarizing myself with past years' material. It was smooth for me as I began early, but it was time-consuming. I enjoyed the autobiographical essay most given the choices I had debated between which life experiences I would...
I loved doing the Intent for FAMU as it was very specific and the prompts encouraged me to elucidate about my artistic inclinations.
Except for that, I had all the materials ready in one form or the other. For the storyboard, I just grabbed screenshots from my short film and made it into an...
Statement was a bit stressful but the portfolio requirements were pretty straight forward. Really enjoyed the 10 page screenplay where I wrote a short story about faith and music.
My application was done very last minute. I managed to do everything in a weekend, and I don't recommend it. It is a lot to do, and I'm thankful to all the people that helped me finish in time. Applying to AFI has been something I had been wanting to do for years. I decided to give it a shot not...
Submitted on Dec 1st, Intro and Assignments viewed on Jan 7th, no interview email yet. Applied to other schools and also have not heard back from others, but it's early. As of today (1/26) with emerson I have submitted at all the schools I applied to.
The application itself was fine. I did sort of have a tough time with the 60 second self-intro video--it's hard to say anything meaningful about yourself in 60 seconds! Otherwise very straightforward I think. I haven't heard anything about an interview yet though, so we'll see I guess.
Directed a short film last year specifically intended for AFI (and NYU). Shot a lot of extra footage while making my USC short, and cut it together to make my AFI short. Spent most of the time expanding on my personal statement for USC/UCLA. I was able to get feedback on my shorts from friends...
Spent the majority of the time working on the treatment. In the end, I felt that it was fairly strong. However, I was revising my Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement up until the deadline, so I felt that I could've allocated more time on those essays instead of going all-in on the treatment.
(This is being submitted a year after submitting, December 2025) Application process went fine, interview went okay but was unprepared for some questions and perhaps gave off a vibe of not being ready for the program. Reapplying this year.
So far it has gone on well enough.
This is my first time submitting for an MFA program and I specifically decided on AFI, for a number of reasons, after researching different programs. It is the only program I have submitted to.
The main things that caused me to submit near the deadline were...
Definitely time and energy consuming. Came from a non film background. Looking back definitely some ways I could have been more authentic in the portfolio.
Asked for feedback after being denied, but they don't really give any information.
There were a lot of materials for this one, the statement of intent (basically a series of short answers) was pretty demanding creatively (at least for me). Quite a few questions asking you to pick and analyze films, images, books, and songs that relate back to you and how they represent your...
