It was a patient process, with me not trying to rush anything. A long thorough process, preparing materials, informational sessions, reaching out to alumni and current students, etc. All of which contributed to the passion and hours put towards drafting my materials.
This was my first time applying. I found the process more straightforward than UCLA or AFI but the essay prompts were more unusual. My sample was from a play I'd written that I adapted into a screenplay. I mostly did playwriting in undergrad so that was the basis of my experience. I did not have...
I believe that was the absolute best application I could have possibly submitted (for who I am right now) and had definitely put my heart and soul into it. I'm also an astrophysics + philosophy major which I thought would give me an advantage as a storyteller, but I believe I need to work on...
Not sure if this is helpful, but a little about me:
I graduated with BFA in acting from UNCSA in 2018. Did UCLA's Professional Program in 2022-2023 where I won the drama pilot competition at the end of the program and was featured in Deadline. Had a few other high placements in competitions and...
The application for USC was a lot; many unique prompts and personal statements to write. I tackled them all in November and tried to capture my writing style in the short scenes, as well as tell a few unique things about myself in my personal statements. Having a strong work sample from...
great, the faculty rep was super nice and communicative. interview process was interesting bc it was required to go in person (and they interviewed around 28 but only accepted around 8). but went really well and am very much considering attending!!!
good, a bit confusing with the transcript uploads. surprised they required the full length sample bc so many others just wanted 10 pgs and/or prompts. need to get to 150 characters blah blah
Loved the prompt options, good times. Had to submit everything with Courier New even the app essays, so that was interesting bc Im so used to times new roman.
Easy application process, enjoyed the interview process much more the second time around. Very excited to be accepted. My understanding is that they are admitting 7 students. I plan to attend the admitted students program in March.
Since this is my second time applying, I was already familiar with the application. The application consists of a personal statement, writing sample, treatment, prompt and an optional visual sample. Everything was straightforward, except rewriting all new materials took more effort the second...
I applied for seven schools this year, all very competitive. It's my first round of applications so I am hoping to at least get interviewed or waitlisted somewhere, but I'm not necessarily expecting to get in this year. I have heard that they have sent interview requests to at least some...
In this school, you basically need to pass two different exams before getting an interview. If you’re among the top half in each exam, you move on to the next round. It’s pretty much a knife fight.
First Exam: Creative Questions
For the first exam, you go to the school and sit surrounded by...
So far it's been thorough and comprehensive, and as of 06/02/2025 I'm just waiting for any notification further. Not knowing when I will hear back from Columbia has been somewhat of a disadvantage to the process. Feels like I've been forgotten altogether.
Everything has gone smoothly. The admissions office representative I connected with was very warm and helpful! Pleasantly surprised to have received an interview invite.
Admitted off the waitlist for Screenwriting & Directing instead of Writing for Film & TV... which I'm okay with! Attending.
Applied to both UT Austin's Michener Center for Writers Writing MFA (screenwriting and fiction emphasis) and UT's separate Screenwriting MFA and submitted the same sample (feature screenplay) for both. Only difference in the process was that Michener didn't ask for a resume.
First time applying. Application was straightforward, I only submitted one writing sample (a feature script) but considered submitting a comedy pilot in addition.
Good! I applied in Dec 2024, submitting my application on the due date, Dec 3. I got an interview invite on Feb 4, and it’s on Feb 24. I’m preparing and looking for help with interview prep as well.
Only submitting one writing sample was intimidating but made the app process easier. Didn’t feel particularly great about my personal statement, but hoping the sample makes up for it.
Smooth; my first time applying Re: questions, Columbia SOA's admissions department was responsive, generous, and helpful. I spoke with a current student with the help of their incredible Admissions Assistant.
Denied on 3/28 after interview on 2/24. I thought the interview was extremely...
I worked on this application, especially my essay, for like 6 months! It's hard work to come up with so many new stories that feel inspired, but it feels rewarding in the end.
