Admissions Requirements and Guidelines for NYU Tisch International Applicants

NYU Tisch requires international graduate applicants to provide additional materials, including English language proficiency scores (if applicable). Submit all documents within your online application or send them via email to tisch.gradadmissions@nyu.edu.

TOEFL scores must be two years old or less and demonstrate department-designated proficiency in Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. For questions about the requirements, contact your department via email.

Do admissions requirements differ for international applicants?​


International applicants are expected to follow the same general admissions guidelines for domestic applicants. They are also not required to provide official standardized test scores. Before they apply, international applicants must ensure their bachelor's degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree by using this equivalency tool.

Does NYU Tisch have minimum English language proficiency scores?​


NYU Tisch does not have minimum required scores for non-native English speakers. But to make your application more competitive, the University offers these guidelines:
  • 100 and above on the TOEFL iBT.
  • 130 and above on the Duolingo English Test.
  • 7.5 and above on the IELTS Academic.
  • 70 and above on the PTE Academic.
  • 191 and above on the Cambridge English Scale.
  • 4.5 and above on the iTEP (C1 Advanced and C2 Mastery).
To send your English proficiency scores to NYU Tisch, follow these guidelines:

1. Duolingo English Test: Consult the official website.
2. TOEFL: NYU Tisch accepts iBT as well as MyBest (Superscore) TOEFL test results. To deliver test scores electronically, use institutional code 9633 and no departmental code 99.
3. IELTS: Look up NYU with the following details:

Who can waive the English language proficiency requirement?


To waive the NYU Tisch TOEFL scores requirement, you must fulfill at least one of the following criteria:
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. university or college.
  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in a country where English is the primary language of instruction for all accredited colleges and universities.
  • Currently enrolled in or graduated from a Master's or Ph.D. program at a University in the U.S. or where English is the primary language of instruction.
If you qualify, you do not need to request a TOEFL test scores waiver. Instead, fill out the appropriate section on your application.

TOEFL waivers are automatically granted to:
  • U.S. Permanent Residents with at least five continuous years of U.S. residency
  • Department of Dramatic Writing applicants
  • Graduate Acting Department applicants
