Offering Film School Application Consultations - AFI Directing Fellow

Here's a version tailored to your actual background:

Hi everyone,

I'm a second-year Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles, and I recently went through the competitive MFA application process that many of you are navigating now.

Before AFI, I graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA, Fine Arts) and worked as a visual creative for HYBE Entertainment, developing content for artists including BTS and CORTIS. My background spans experimental film, narrative work, music videos, and photography.

I'm offering consultations for filmschool.org members on application materials—personal statements, creative portfolios, visual samples, and short scripts. As someone who successfully applied as an international student and is currently immersed in one of the top directing programs, I can offer practical insights on what programs look for and how to present your work effectively.

If you're applying to AFI or other West Coast schools (or considering them), I have firsthand experience to share. Feel free to reach out and I can provide more details about my background and how I might help.

Best,
Hyo

Hi Hyo.

I'm a commercial director applying to AFI's directing program, yet confused by the required proportion in its statement. It implies that personal story should be the majority - got it - but how deep should we detail others like favorite people/movies and collaboration experience?
Appanrently I wanna save words to focus on the traditional "why me? why AFI" part, but then I don't wanna violate its requirement either.
Could you kindly share some advice on their real expectation? Or if you offer paid one-on-one feedback, I’d be happy to learn more about that as well.

Dawson
