Editing Workshop - Is anyone interested in learning Media Composer and cutting scenes from a real Netflix show?

Drama_Queens-Gambit.webp
As some of you may or may not know, I'm in the Editor's Guild and I've been an editor for the past 25 years having cut everything from music videos, documentaries, 3 independent feature films, to countless hours of television for MTV, VH1, A&E, Spike, Travel Channel, OWN, and Discovery. At one point in time ages ago I even worked for Avid Technology and taught Media Composer.

Since I have some downtime between seasons on the show I'm currently editing I thought it would be fun to go back to my roots teaching Media Composer and being able to hopefully share helpful approaches to editing that I've learned over the past 25 years.

I came across a program from American Cinema Editors and the ACE Education Center where they partnered with Netflix and are offering footage from certain shows and movies to educators to use in their classes. Would anyone be interested in learning Media Composer and the art of editing using footage from The Queen's Gambit?

I'm thinking the workshop would be something like this:
  • DAY 1 Saturday - Zoom meeting to go over the dailies and script together and talk about the process of reviewing footage and possible ways to go about editing it. You then have 6 days to edit the scene on your own.
  • DAY 2 Sunday - Zoom meeting to go over some tips on editing with Avid Media Composer
  • DAYS 3 thru 5 - I'm available via the private group chat or DM if you have questions
  • DAY 6 Friday - Edits due by midnight in your timezone.
  • DAY 8 Sunday - Zoom meeting to screen everyone's cuts, give notes, and discuss them as a class.
There would be a $$$ fee to participate and all participants will additionally receive lifetime FilmSchool.org Supporter+ Memberships.

If interested, please reply here and/or send me a Direct Message.

I should also note that there are some very serious rules that would need to be followed for using the Netflix footage. From the ACE website:

Student Responsibility, Security & Monitoring (Read Carefully)

  • Materials Are Not Provided in Perpetuity
  • Footage is licensed for short-term academic use by enrolled students only and must not be archived or reused after their project and/or course is completed.
  • Each student must sign a legal release before receiving any materials. This agreement is a binding license between the student, ACE, and Netflix.
    • The intent is not just legal compliance, it’s also a valuable opportunity to educate students about the ethics of working with copyrighted content and respecting studio property.
  • All downloads are forensically watermarked to the individual student.
  • ACE, Netflix, and their security partner Irdeto actively monitor the internet for unauthorized use. If materials appear online (e.g., YouTube, social media, TikTok), consequences may include:
    • Legal action against the individual
    • Termination of participation for the class and institution
    • Loss of access to the program for future semesters

Hi Chris, I’m extremely late to this post but if the opportunity is still available or any further opportunities arise, I would love the chance to learn from you and build my skills in editing! I’ve very recently acquired access to Avid Media Composer with a student license & I’m eager to get learning!
