For a film student or a first-time director, generative AI creates a strange dilemma. It can make ambitious ideas more accessible: concept exploration, storyboards, previsualization, visual tests, temporary voices, or effects that would otherwise be beyond a student budget. Used carefully, it might give a young filmmaker more room to experiment.
But film school is also where we are supposed to learn how to solve problems with other people: directing actors, communicating with cinematographers and designers, making decisions under constraints, and discovering a personal visual language. If AI removes too much of that difficulty, could it also remove part of the education?
I suspect there is an important difference between using AI as a private development tool and using generated performances, voices, images, or finished shots in the final film. Transparency, consent, training data, authorship, and the effect on collaborators all seem relevant.
If you were advising a film student making a first serious short, what uses of AI would you consider educationally useful? What should remain off-limits—and should film schools establish clear rules rather than leaving every student to decide alone?
