Hello!
I'm applying to film schools in London and Dublin and wanted to get some feedback on my personal statement. The only instruction was to write a Personal statement (up to 750 words).
Please let me know what you think/any edits that might make it better. Thank you!
The first film I ever saw was The Wizard of Oz. I was two years old and my grandma dressed me in her favourite shirt (which was a dress on my tiny frame) and draped a jewelled necklace and delicate bracelets on my little limbs. She told me that the movies were special and watching them was an occasion, especially seeing a film for the first time. She showed me my first thriller film, The Birds, when I was four. During the bird attack scene when Tippi Hedren is in the attic she released her own birds into the room, causing a frenzy of chaos that, admittedly caused a prolonged fear of birds, but also imparted upon me the power of an immersive experience. While she was alive, she shared her love of film with me: Shirley Temple’s lovable singalongs, Jimmy Stewart’s stirring speeches, Fred and Ginger’s effortless chemistry while they glided across the screen.
I come from a family that has always viewed film like water, a necessity to live. My grandfather was a runner at Pinewood studios during the Golden Era of film. My uncle and father work in film development and art direction, respectively. My desire to create my own films wasn’t clear until I completed my undergraduate degree and left my job in Human Resources. Throughout school, I thought I wanted to teach because I like the performance of telling stories to children, then work in publishing because I wanted to share stories with the world. Once I saw that everything I was interested in pointed toward pursuing a career in film and television, I began working in any production role I could get. I’ve worked in pre-production roles such as script-writer and editor, content developer and researcher, casting director and line producer. I’ve also worked in on-set roles like production assistant, prop master and set dresser, and assistant director and script supervisor. During this time I also completed an MFA in Creative Writing, specialising in Screenwriting. Through my degree I saw how much I visualise the stories I’m telling, wanting to craft and display the narratives in my head.
The Master’s program at the [insert school here] will provide me with the guidance on how to use the tools I already possess to make the films that I want to see in the world right now. It will provide me with an opportunity to participate in a community in which I can develop myself both as a filmmaker as well as a collaborator, learning from others by assisting them in their endeavours. The program offers a multifaceted approach to film studies (theory and practice) that appeals to me as an analytical and hands-on learner. My goal with this program is to create films that will inspire and impact others in the same way those early films with my grandma have stuck with me all these years later.
