Go now or wait a year (BU)

Hi guys!

I was accepted into BU for the fall of 2024. I interviewed with NYU this year but was ultimately not accepted. Is it worth waiting until next year to reapply to NYU? BU gave me a decent scholarship and while I think it is a less well-known program I am considering attending. Let me know your thoughts! Thank you!

Is this for screenwriting or production?

If NYU is your dream school you could then take time to work on your writing and your application to apply again.

How much would it cost to go to BU vs NYU? That's something else to consider. Try to avoid as much debt as possible.

Hi Emily!

I attended a state school in Massachusetts for my undergrad and studied film there. Multiple of my professors from my undergrad film program were BU MFA graduates and advised me against applying to BU for my MFA. They felt like the program was more geared toward people already in the industry and that their alumni network was not very strong. In short, it's good if you want to go into academia, but not great if you want to go into industry.

On the other hand, my friend from the film industry went to BU for her screenwriting and she really enjoyed the program. However, she has shifted her career focus into working in the production office because the screenwriting opportunities in Boston/New England are limited.

If you plan on moving to LA or New York after, BU might be a smart choice for you financially (especially if they are giving you a lot of money). But staying in the Boston area would not be super helpful for your career after graduation. Also the cost of living in Boston is just as expensive as living in New York, so it won't be cheaper cost of living wise.

The advice I was given about grad school was that it is very expensive and time consuming. Go somewhere that you really want to attend. If you don't love BU's program, consider reapplying to other schools next year. For many people it takes multiple years of applications to get into their top pick.

I hope this helps!
