Any good documentary recs? Probably a better use of my time than stressing over my application status! My top 5:

1. Waiting for Superman
2. Hail Satan
3. American Movie
4. Minding the Gap
5. Dick Johnson is Dead

also if you've seen any of these, lets dish, please.

I recently watched the Tina Turner doc on HBO Max and The Donut King on Hulu, really liked them both. The Donut King is really interesting if you plan on going to school in LA because one of the first things I noticed about LA is how there are donut shops everywhere, the documentary gets into the historical context behind that. I'm halfway through the Bill Cosby documentary on ShowTime and it's good so far if you have the capacity to deal with the heavy subject matter.

adding the Donut King to the TOP of my watchlist. I haven’t watched that one for that reason. I heard it was really good! would love to know your thoughts when you finish it!

I think it was a good watch. It acknowledges the barriers Cosby broke down and why he means so much to some people but then tackles the terrible stuff he was doing at the same time. It gave space to the survivors who wanted to speak and also has cultural commentators and historians speaking on how he was able to get away with it. Definitely deals with heavy stuff but I think it was well done.

Hairat by Jessica Beshir! Amazing! It’s a short film but just wow.
Just finished Hairat. Gave me chills from start to finish. Absolutely loved it. Do you ever wonder how they are able to film worlds like this? If I see a hyena, i’m running. full stop. Thank you for the rec! I love short docs, if you have anymore, my Vimeo is already loaded…

Watch anything by Adam Curtis free on Youtube. If you are into politics, start with “The Power of Nightmares”. If you don’t like consumerism, start with “The Century of the Self.” Curtis is — in my opinion which has no value — great, and his documentaries are very “engaging”, too. CBS had a very well done series many years ago: “World War I”. There is one more but you will have to buy this one: Werner Herzog’s documentary film about Gulf War I: “Lessons of Darkness”
