Brooklyn College 2025 - MFA Live Action

Hey I had my interview with Matthew and we went over the following questions:

Why is now the perfect moment for you in your life to go to film school / Feirstein especially ?

Do you have an example on when collaboration did not work so well ?
How did you handle it ?

Was there a moment with your short film when everything came to a a halt, something that really went wrong ?
How did you handle it?

What film have you seen recently that you wish you would have made yourself?

Congrats! Don't forget to log and/or update your applications on our site! It really helps with all the useful data such as notification dates, scholarship awarded etc. that I'm sure everyone appreciates. :)

Sup folks, just wanted to say hi to some potential fellow Fall 2025 classmates! I'll be heading to Feirstein with a focus on screenwriting and potential interests in VFX... and hopefully they have a class about MoCap acting, if I could one day moonlight as the body capture of low budget monsters, that would justify the tuition!

Excited to meet and work with some of you

They DO NOT have MoCap acting anymore, They disassembled that room. If they told you they will offer it they’re lying to you.

they don’t do production tracks anymore, so it doesn’t matter
They do have production tracks? You can choose to focus on cinematography, directing, as well as p.d, and there’s production sound courses too. It may not be specific but you can definitely graduate with a focus on specific production areas. You can do a lot there.

Congratulations! I mentioned above but I will be attending next year. That said, I of course haven't started the program yet so take what I have to say with a grain salt, but I have a good understanding of the school after lots of research. Here's essentially why I committed to Feirstein...

1. It's actually affordable - just over 20k for a year's tuition in film school is pretty unheard of, especially if you want to stay in NYC. Yes NYU and Columbia are more established programs, and yet there is no way I was gonna put myself in that much debt for a degree.

2. The equipment and facilities - Feirstein is unrivaled in terms of camera equipment, stages and studios, and other resources for production and post-production. The school is massive, not to mention it's located within Steiner Studios (although it should be noted they are still completely independent. This was made clear in the tour, and students should not expect to just walk onto a hot set).

3. Collaboration over competition - this program is three years, and allows students to learn all facets of filmmaking, instead of pigeon holing yourself into one area. Although you do eventually specify a concentration, this is a great opportunity (especially for directors) to learn the physical trade of filmmaking, which will then make yourself more marketable in the real world. That said, you may be a DP on one film, a producer for another, and a director for another all at the same time. Feirstein markets itself as a program made to encourage collaboration over anything else, unlike other programs where all the students are competing to be the "best", while exclusively focusing on personal projects.

I want to make one thing clear above all else - literally no one will ever care what name is at the top of your degree. As long as you're learning and making connections, you'll be set. Make friends with your peers, follow the ones who are committed and creative, and it will be a worth while investment. Those people (as well as the professors, where half are teaching at Columbia and NYU as well) will help build your foundation. It does not have the same esteemed reputation as other schools, mostly because it's a fairly new program, and yet I really believe film school is what you make it. With the resources, low cost, and opportunity to learn such a wide breadth of skills, I'm definitely looking forward to going.

I’m a cuny ba student, we design our own degree and can take classes anywhere within cuny. I took the main production course and directing the actor last semester at feirstein
Do you have to pay the additional excellence fee they charge if I go to Hunter or another CUNY school, can take a class there without the excellence fee if I go elsewhere. Paying an additional five grand a semester for an excellence fee is steep when you still have to pay for your own hardware, hard drives and software.

I'm unclear of the question but will try an answer: if you are specifically a cuny ba undergraduate student, you can design your degree to attend classes there with some restrictions. This includes grad schools like feirstein as long as you can get permission from the school. I fortunately do not have to pay the excellence fee as I'm not charged through Feirstein, does that answer your question?
