I'm currently a communications major in the school of edu at NYU, I"m trying to apply to the film school (tisch). I had to do a transfer application and I'll here back in a month or so.
However, my roomate is a film student, as are many of my friends. First semster you take two film classes: language of film, which is film history and basics and either animation or digital frame and sequence. Second semester you deal a lot with sound. I guess this info is really only useful to Alan. Hopefully we'll be in some of the same class's next year.

I applied there for a transfer a year ago. They accepted every single credit. I had to take one film course, where you make five films in one semester, then the second was video.
Student body and classes will vary greatly from school to school. Are you still in High school? Film Schools usually are better and pickier, so it's a lot more mature.
