We turned off direct messaging in 2021 due to people receiving direct message porn spam. Ew. 
People had to be Supporting Members or be members for a little while with some non SPAM posts to have it turned on.
However I know how useful the direct messaging is for people and since SPAM has been less of a problem on the site recently (I installed other safeguards) so we're turning it back on.
If you notice any problems please let me know and it'll be turned off again.
