Hi everyone,
When applicants usually get their emails for interview, or about being accepted/rejected? I applied to Columbia, NYU and USC but I haven't heard anything yet.
Hi,Hey everyone! Just wondering if anyone has applied for UT Austin too and heard of anything from them yet?
Hey! I applied to LMU (for Writing/Producing). Around what time did you get notification?
Thanks so much for the response! Already on it!![]()
UT Texas just rejected my application. They said they've got120 applications for a maximum of 12 seats this year.
Hello, I also applied to UT Austin and got the same email a couple days ago.
I also applied to FSU and have an interview scheduled beginning of March. Anyone else apply to FSU production?
Though I ended up choosing to attend LMU, I did make the trip to Tallahassee last year for the FSU production interview...if you have any questions or anything, let me know!
Actually yeah, could you tell me about your interview some?
I am assuming they will want to know more details about my application and what I will work on as a student, but I am just guessing.
What made you chose LMU over FSU?
Thank you very much!
So for the interview, I was grouped with, if I recall correctly, five other potential students. First, the FSU Head of Production gave us a little speech about the program. Then, they take the students in one by one to interview with a committee of three people. This individual interview was pretty intimidating. None of the three interviewers looked particularly amused but upon talking to the current grad students and other interviewees, it became clear that this was the case for everyone. (The interview consisted mostly of questions asking about things on my resume, etc. in addition to random questions...like "what is a movie you saw recently that you disliked? Why?", etc. )
After the individual interviews, there is a group interview section with the five other interviewees. They gave us a prompt and about five minutes to come up with story beats. After the five minutes were up, we had to present the story to the interviewers, whether we were ready or not. Oh, and the interviewers watch you intimidatingly while you discuss the story with your group hahah.
Overall, I loved my experience in Tallahassee and think FSU is a great film school. It was hard turning them down but I chose LMU for a few reasons:
1. The FSU film program is VERY intensive. They don't allow you to leave Tallahassee on most weekends apparently and you have many of hours of class per day. I definitely preferred LMU's model of not having TOO much class time, allowing students to work on as many sets as possible, which really is the best experience you can get.
2. Location. Tallahassee is an awesome place but Los Angeles is where I wanted to be. Though the intensive nature of FSU's program kind of makes the inability to have access to a wide range of industry internships and connections moot (since you wouldn't have any time for those regardless of location), I preferred the chance to get acquainted with the industry while still in school. Plus, the LMU internship program is absolutely top-notch.
3. LMU's program seems to provide more flexibility. After our first year, we can pretty much make our own schedule and take classes in what focuses we are interested in. For example, though I'm in the production program, I am still extremely interested in screenwriting. LMU allows production students to take writing classes with the screenwriting students (and it doesn't hurt that LMU has perhaps the best screenwriting MFA program in the country so the screenwriting faculty is pretty amazing.)
Also, though it didn't play a HUGE part in my decision, LMU brings in pretty amazing guests onto campus to talk to students pretty frequently. We just had the cinematographer of Nebraska come in the other week and over the next month or so, we have Alfonso Cuaron, Judd Apatow, David O. Russell and William Friedkin speaking to students. Last year, they brought in J.J. Abrams, etc.
Sorry for the long post (and I realize that towards the end I was talking more about LMU than I was FSU so I apologize for that haha).
At the end of the day, though, FSU is a terrific film school. It just wasn't the right fit for me...and that's really what you should be judging schools by. Don't worry about the name of the school...worry about how you think you'd fit into the school and if the school would fit your needs.
Best of luck! Let me know if you want more clarification of the interview process, etc.!
